1979 Mustang Crate Engines and Cylinder Blocks

Crate Engines & Cylinder Blocks

The third generation Mustang was vastly different from the original Mustang design, in terms of both aesthetics and horsepower. Largely influenced by looming federal restrictions and the oil crisis of the ‘70s, the 1979 Mustang engine options were very different from their earlier powerhouse predecessors. Unfortunately, no matter which engine your Mustang has, you’re bound to run into problems – or maybe even just want an upgrade – sooner or later. CJ Pony Parts can help.

1979 Crate Engines & Cylinder Blocks

Although the smaller platform Fox Body design helped make the new Mustang lighter and more efficient, many diehard Mustang fans felt the new engines were lacking in true Mustang power. The 1979 Mustang crate engine was offered in 4 different varieties:

• 2.3L 2V 4 cylinder with 88 horsepower
• Turbo charged 2.3L 2V 4 cylinder with 132 horsepower
• 2.8L 2V V-6 with a 109 horsepower which was later replaced by a 3.3L 1V inline 6 cylinder with 85 horsepower
• 5.0L 2V V-8 boasting 140 horsepower
