1979 Mustang Rear Axle

Rear Axle

If you have a 1979 Mustang that fires up, but is not exactly what you’d call drivable, chances are you have some rear axle work to perform. The rear axle in your Mustang is part of the chain of components that transfers power from the engine directly into the wheels. Without a properly functioning rear axle, you will have a hard time trying to drive and control your vehicle.

1979 Rear Axle

The rear axle starts at the end of the driveshaft and is composed of several components, including:

• The Differential, which houses many different intricate gears and bearings including the Ring and Pinion Gear, Side Gear, Differential Bearing, Gasket and more
• Axle Shaft
• Axle Housing
• Wheel Bearing
• Other various bearings and seals that connect all the parts of the rear axle together

The 1979 Mustang rear axle was offered with either a conventional open differential or with Ford’s limited slip differential, which they called Traction Lok. Some models were equipped with a 6.75 or 7.5 rear axle, but both were 28-spline.

Upgrading your 1979 Mustang Rear Axle

It helps to know which factory axle you have before delving into your 1979 Mustang rear axle upgrade. To identify which 1979 Mustang rear axle you have, you’ll want to take a peek at the casing of the differential. You should see an axle tag decoder, which will identify the axle ratio, ring gear diameter and build date.

If you find your 1979 Mustang has an open differential and you’re planning on upgrading your rear axle, you may as well upgrade to a limited slip differential for better traction and control.
