Mustang Seats 1964-2014

The Fox Body Mustang made its debut in 1979. Despite its radical new design, this third-generation Mustang was mostly met with rave reviews. The newer body style was lighter, more efficient and nimble, and the interior was well laid-out and quite functional. However, there was one interior aspect that fell short of driver expectations: the 1979 Mustang seats. Thankfully, Ford started offering a Recaro seat option by the middle of the year. However, if you passed on the sport seats, your 1979 Mustang came equipped with low- or high-back bucket seats. Car and Driver critiqued these seats as being soft and unsupportive back in 1979 when they were new, so if you still have your original set, it’s definitely time to upgrade after more than 30 years of use.

Swap Your 1979 Mustang Bucket Seats for Race Seats

There are plenty of reasons to swap out your stock Mustang seats for premium race seats. Not only are the stock Mustang seats soft and unsupportive, they aren’t adjustable. Designed with a fixed rake position, there isn’t a much you can do to correct their seating position.

Seating isn’t just about comfort, though – it’s also about safety. Having a supportive and adjustable seat allows you to be in the best position possible to handle your Mustang. The old bucket seats lacked head and neck support, which we now know to be crucial to preventing whiplash in the case of an accident.

Sport seats are contoured and supportive, because they’re designed to help keep you in place during tight maneuvering and cornering. At CJ Pony Parts, we carry a wide variety of 1979 Mustang seats, including race seats from quality brands like Corbeau and Procar. We offer these seats in several different styles and materials and are available with or without adjustable backs. Plus, we carry everything you need to complete your upgrade, including seat tracks, seat adapters and seat belts.

Restoring Your 1979 Mustang Seats

If you prefer to keep your car original, you can restore your 1979 Mustang seats with brand new seat foam. We carry replacement seat foam from TMI Products to fit high back, low back and Recaro seats. These premium seat foam kits are thick, durable and designed to provide comfort and support.
