1987 Brakes

When to Check Your Brakes

Most Mustang owners are sensitive to changes in the way their ride handles. Even so, brake problems can sneak up on you. Early intervention in brake issues is essential and can mean the difference between a simple, inexpensive repair — replacing the brake pads — and a more costly one (replacing the rotors or drums). Here’s what you should be on the lookout for next time you take your Mustang for a spin:

• High-pitched squealing is the first warning sign, usually indicating that the pads need to be replaced. If not addressed, this will progress to a grinding noise, a sign of wear to the rotors.
• A stuck caliper can cause your Mustang to pull to either side when driving and braking. Often, we assume this is a wheel alignment issue — however, brakes should also be investigated as a potential cause.
• Brake pulsation is usually a sign that your rotors have warped and need to be replaced. When placed under extreme driving conditions, such as frequent travel in hilly roads, rotors can warp due to stress.

Brake replacements can be performed by the average home mechanic with a well-equipped garage. Many of the products in our online store feature a user-submitted installation guide that will walk you through the process. You can also visit our technical library for more information, including advice on how to properly perform a two person brake bleed.

If you’ve already successfully replaced the brakes in your 1987 Mustang, we want to hear from you. Customers who submit their own installation guide are eligible to receive up to $100 in store credit towards a future purchase. Find out more online or contact a sales representative for full requirements and details.
