Common 1988 Mustang Gauge Problems and Solutions

There are a couple common issues that can pop up with your Mustang’s gauges. And, in fact, sometimes the problems aren’t with your gauges at all — they’re with parts related to your gauges.

For example, sometimes you could have a faulty, worn or old sending unit that needs to be replaced. If your gas gauge is no longer accurate, but all your other gauges are accurate, the issue most likely has to do with the fuel level sending unit, or possibly even the anti-slosh module on the back of the cluster. The issue isn’t always with the actual gauge itself.

If your gauges function properly but some gauges don’t light up when they should, it’s possible you need to replace the bulbs behind your dash. You can replace old-school bulbs with more advanced, efficient and longer-lasting LEDs that produce a brighter glow. That’ll help you read your gauge when you need to see it, and it’ll also mean you won’t have to worry about burnouts again for a long, long time.

You can also upgrade your stock gauges with gauge kits that have a better layout. Upgrading your 1988 Mustang gauges to new digital models require a special speed pulse adapter to create an accurate speedometer reading, among other customizations. In this case, the speedometer adapter bolts onto the transmission and converts the mechanical reading into an electronic speed pulse reading that the digital gauges can understand and accurately reflect. There are other modifications you can get for new gauges as well, but they all depend on your preferences and what you want out of your Mustang.
