1990 Suspension

Possible Signs of Suspension Damage

Whether you’re restoring a Mustang that’s been sitting for years, or trying to diagnose a problem in your daily driver, there are a number of signs that can indicate damage to one or more of your suspension components:

• Poor ride quality — It can be hard to notice subtle changes to your ride quality over time. Serious suspension problems, however, are more likely to lead to dramatic changes in the way your Mustang handles. In particular, pay attention to how your vehicle handles potholes for indicators of strut damage.
• Steering wheel drift — Drifting to either side while driving straight can be caused by deflated tires, or it can be the result of damage to your tie rods, strut bearings, ball joints or other suspension components. Minor alignment issues can often be adjusted, though more serious problems will require replacing the part.
• Grinding noises — Grinding noises while turning are typically the result of wheel bearing damage. Other noises to be on the lookout for include clunking and knocking, which are often caused by bad struts or ball joints.
