April 17, 2014 is a date that Mustang fans everywhere have circled on their calendars. This date marks the 50th anniversary of the release of the very first Mustang. Not so coincidentally, Ford is also expected to officially launch the 2015 Mustang at this time. If you don’t know much about the new ‘Stang, you’re not alone, as Ford is making a concerted effort to keep it under wraps. CJ Pony Parts has put together the following 2015 Mustang preview based on a combination of facts, speculation and rumors we’ve been able to uncover so far.
Independent Rear Suspension
It’s pretty clear that 2015 Mustang will be equipped with an independent rear suspension. This should result in improved handling and help to maintain better road compliance on all types of surfaces. With the exception of some SVT Cobra models built in the late 1990s and early 2000s, this marks the first time that the Mustang will be offered with an IRS.
We’re also pretty certain that the 2015 Mustang will come with the option to select a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, making it the first Mustang four-banger in more than 20 years. While many Mustang purists aren’t thrilled with the prospect of the return of the four-cylinder, economy-minded owners concerned about spiraling fuel costs will be pleased to learn that a turbo Mustang could deliver up to 35 mpg on the highway.
The Coyote Isn’t Headed for Extinction
We’ve heard a lot of ugly rumors about the possible demise of the Coyote V8 engine, a favorite of Ford car and truck buyers for several years. However, we have it on good authority that a 5.0L Coyote will be available with the 2015 Mustang GT and may approach a power output of a muscular 500 hp.
The 2015 Mustang Will Look…Different
Expect the new Mustang to offer a bit of a departure from the 2014 model in terms of style. If you’re familiar with the Evos concept car that Ford first unveiled back in 2011, you can get a pretty good indication of what the 2015 might look like.
