As the highly anticipated release of the 2015 Ford Mustang continues to draw closer, there’s a lot of talk about its weight. Let’s be honest: the Mustang has put on a few pounds over the years. In fact, the 2014 Mustang is about a half ton heavier than the original 1965 version. While Ford has refused to confirm this, it appears that the Mustang has been put on a major diet. The new Mustang that is scheduled to make its public debut on April 17, 2014 is rumored to weight about 400 lbs. less than its immediate predecessor.
Meeting Car Buyer Demands and Complying With Government Regulations
The belief is that Ford reduced the weight of the 2015 Mustang in large part to meet the demands of budget-conscious consumers who are concerned with how much they’re paying at the pump. Increased fuel efficiency also helps to ensure compliance with government regulations that require car manufacturers to improve fuel economy by four percent per year through 2025. Less bulk should mean improved handling and performance, which just about any driver can appreciate.
2015 Mustang Weight Reduction Achieved Via Smaller Dimensions and Lighter Materials
Ford was able to shed the extra pounds by decreasing the Mustang’s overall length by about eight percent and its width by about 10 percent. In addition, the Mustang’s updated manufacturing process is now said to include technologically advanced materials that are lighter in weight, although this is not expected to have a significant impact on the vehicle’s overall production costs.
The Price May Not Go On a Diet
Speaking of costs, reduced weight does not necessarily mean a reduction in price. Speculation about the 2015 Mustang’s price ranges from about the same as last year to an increase of as much as 10 percent. We probably won’t know for sure until we get closer to the actual release date. Naturally, buyer preferences with regard to model, engine size, options and accessories will play a major role in determining the final cost.
