The Mustang camshaft is one of the most important components of the engine. In fact, some have referred to the Mustang camshaft as the mechanical computer in the engine, since it controls the intake and exhaust valves. The Mustang camshaft is responsible for telling these valves when to open, how long to stay open, how far to stay open, when to close and how fast to close, making the Mustang camshaft vital to the functionality and performance of the engine.

In 1996, the new 4.6L V8 was introduced, which started as a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) system, then was expanded to dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) in 2005. The new Coyote 5.0 V8 maintains this Mustang camshaft configuration. For ‘V’ configuration engines, each engine with a SOHC setup will have two camshafts, one per cylinder bank, and DOHC engines will have four camshafts, two per cylinder bank.
