Winterizing Your MustangWe hear from a lot of Mustang owners who are in the process of relocating to Alaska and have concerns about whether or not their ride will be able to handle the cold weather. In fact, in most parts of Alaska, prepping your Mustang for winter is no different than it is anywhere in the northeast or Midwest. Here are some tips to keep your ‘Stang running its best all year long:
- Get a block heater: If you plan on driving your Mustang through the winter, an engine block heater is the best investment you can make. When temperatures dip below 20°F, a block heater will reduce strain on your engine, improve fuel economy and make cold starts much easier.
- Winter tires: Winter tires are another essential for Mustang owners in Alaska. Bridgestone Blizzaks are a popular seller that many drivers trust in icy and snowy conditions. Studded tires are a popular option during extreme weather but be warned — in most parts of Alaska, it’s illegal to drive on paved roads with studded tires between May 1 and September 15.
- Drive safe and weigh down your trunk: Like all RWD vehicles, Mustangs are prone to skidding in winter weather conditions. Weighing down your trunk with a 100 lb. bag of sand or dirt can greatly increase your traction on slick or icy roads. And of course, moderate your driving when roads are wet — accelerate cautiously and leave plenty of room when braking.
