Mustang batteries are absolutely vital parts of your Mustang, as they help start your car and keep the electrical system powered. Mustang batteries are typically able to power the starter motor, lights and the Mustang ignition system of your Mustang engine, allowing you to use some of these features while the car is off and then to start the car. Typically, Mustang batteries are lead-acid type batteries, which are designed with six galvanic cells in series, which forms a 12-volt system. Each cell provides 2.1 volts, for a total of 12.6 volts at full charge.

Mustang batteries are made of plates of lead and separate plates of lead dioxide. Both of these plates are submerged in an electrolyte solution that is made up of about 38% sulfuric acid and 62% water. In Mustang batteries, this causes a chemical reaction that releases electrons. These electrons inside of your Mustang battery flow through conductors to produce the electricity that your car needs to start and power the electronics. To recharge the Mustang battery, the Mustang alternator causes the entire chemical reaction to be reversed, meaning the lead sulfate reforms into lead oxide and lead, restoring the plates inside of your Mustang battery back to their original condition. Eventually, though, Mustang batteries will wear out, as the plates won't completely reform each time, and some of the material will accumulate at the bottom of the cells, eventually short circuiting the plates and causing your Mustang to not start.
