Ford Mustang Oil System

A Mustang oil pan is a standard component in any Mustang on the road. The Mustang oil pan is mounted underneath the engine, using the Mustang oil pan gasket to seal it tightly to the engine. It receives oil from the Mustang engine, after it has been circulated through, and stores it until it's picked up by the Mustang oil pump for recirculation in the engine.

There are two types of Mustang oil pans: a wet sump and a dry sump. Sump is a term synonymous with oil pan. The wet sump system is common in most passenger cars, including the Mustang, and stores the oil right in the Mustang oil pan before recirculation in the engine. The dry sump system collects the oil, then sucks it into an external tank before it is recirculated into the engine. The advantage of the dry sump is that it gives greater power, since there's no oil sloshing around in the Mustang oil pan against the working engine, plus it creates a vacuum inside the Mustang oil pan, which also increases power. This type of system is used primarily in performance applications, and isn't typically found in a Mustang.

If your Mustang is leaking oil, there's a strong possibility that the Mustang oil pan is at fault. Because it is at the bottom of the engine, which sits pretty low in most Mustangs to begin with, even lower than the bottom of the Mustang body & sheet metal, the Mustang oil pan can impact anything from large speed bumps (especially in lowered Mustangs), objects in the road and curbs very easily, causing leaks. Also, especially in older Mustangs, the Mustang engine gasket that seals the Mustang oil pan to the engine can fail, leaking oil and requiring replacement.
