1996 Mustang Parts

1996

This year's Mustang came with huge changes to many 1996 Ford Mustang parts. After almost 40 years, the 302 V-8 was retired and replaced with a new 4.6 liter 'modular' V-8. These new 1996 Mustang parts in the GT made the same power as the outgoing V-8, and ended up being slightly slower than the old engine. However, the new 96 Mustang parts were smoother and quieter than the old engine, and could meet emissions requirements, which the old V-8 couldn't any longer.

Ford Mustang 1996

By Bill Tumas: The new engine in the 1996 Mustang GT was heavily criticized for its lack of performance. While the specifications on the 4.6L V8 remained very similar to the outgoing engine, it didn't perform as well in racing applications, nor did it came anywhere near matching the output of the engines in competing cars. This led to fewer sales, initially, of the new 1996 Mustang and outrage, though the 4.6L V8 eventually became well loved by many Mustang owners.

The 1996 Ford Mustang parts on the Cobra were also revised for a version of the new engine that had with dual overhead cams and 32 valves, making more power, at 305 horsepower and 300 pound feet, than before. These new 1996 Mustang parts on the Cobra didn't make the Mustang the fastest muscle car available, but it was certainly more competitive. Power to the V-6 was also slightly increased. Few other 96 Mustang parts were changed, except those needing revised to accommodate the new engines. As a result of the big engine change and few other changes to 1996 Ford Mustang parts, sales plummeted 27%, to 135,620.

The 1996 Mustang Cobra did receive the one major styling change for the model year when it received a redesigned hood. The 1996 Mustang Cobra also was the recipient of a special color package, called the Chameleon Cobra package. This consisted of a very special, unique paint scheme that allowed it to appear as a different color depending on the light, angle and shadows. While expensive, 3000 copies were produced and it is a very rare 1996 Mustang today.
