We Saw the New Pony Car at NAIASIf you weren't at the 2014 North American International Auto Show, you missed your first chance to get a glimpse of the redesigned 2015 Mustang. Set to debut in showrooms this fall, the new Mustang celebrates fifty years of the nameplate with a bold vision for global muscle car dominance. Given the hometown crowd, it's no surprise that the new pony was unveiled to rave reviews; drivers and journalists alike were impressed by the balance it struck between embracing the future and respecting the past. Zak Estrada of Jalopnik.com went as far as to call it "the most advanced muscle car ever built."
So what's all the hype about, really? Here are a few things we learned about the 2015 Mustang during our time in Detroit:
Engines: As rumored, the 2015 will be offered with a 3.7L V6 (base model), a 5.0L GT and, in between the two, a turbocharged 4 cylinder outputting 305 horsepower. The 4 cylinder, which incorporates Ford's EcoBoost technology, is a clear bid to win hearts in Asian and European markets, which are anticipated to make up as much as 10% of the new pony car's sales.
Suspension: The other big news about the 2015 was the long-awaited availability of an independent rear suspension. While IRS was briefly available on the 1999 Cobra, this marks the first time it will be offered across the board.
Tech: The new Mustang will get the myFord Touch system, as well as a number of other high-tech features, including a Shaker audio system, keyless start, blind spot monitoring and cross-traffic alerting.
Chassis: The 2015's chassis is anchored by a new perimeter subframe that is lighter and contributes to better handling and more predictable wheel control.
The 2015 Mustang hasn't been given an official release date yet, but when it does, CJ Pony Parts will be the first to offer everything you need to accessorize and upgrade what is sure to be a classic car on its own.
