The Ford Performance GT350R steering wheel makes an excellent upgrade for any 2015 through 2017 Mustang. It will work with a six-speed manual or the automatic and includes a steering wheel cell, which has an Alcantara suede finish with contrasting red stitching, a leather bottom and a red centering stripe as well.
Unique to the R package is you actually get these three trim pieces, which come in a smoked black chrome, which will look really good with your R wheel.
To install the steering wheel, you're going to get in the car, make sure your steering wheel is straight and then disconnect the battery. We're messing with the airbag. We're taking a lot of sensors and disconnecting things. Disconnect the battery first to make sure you don't have any issues. Then, we're going to remove the airbag.
The airbag's held in by spring clips, these small holes on the side here. I'm going to take a small flat head screwdriver. In my case, I'm using a small torque screwdriver. Put it in. Push it straight back, and you'll feel the spring. Push against the spring, and the airbag will come out. There's one on each side.
With the airbag out, there's three clips to remove. We push up on the clip. Same thing over here, pull up on the clip. With the clip all the way out, with a little black tab you've got to push in then and disconnect.
Now to remove the wheel, there's one bolt in the middle here. It's going to be a 24 millimeter. Impact gun is easiest, but you can get it with a wrench, too. Give the wheel a tap. You can remove it by fishing the wires through the back and then disconnect.
Now, there's a little bit of disassembly involved from the original wheel to transfer items over to our new R wheel. Now, as far as the trim goes, the R actually includes the matching R trim, which is a little bit of a darker, almost a smoked chrome versus the original. What we have to do is get all the switches off of here and then transfer them over. Start on the side here by removing two of the torque screws. Because we've got to remove it, start on the end and use a small pick if you have to, just get the plastic separated here and then disconnect from the back.
Now to remove the cruise control, we've got two more screws, one up here and one down below. This one, you may just want to flip it over. The clip's kind of hard to get to, but it's right in here. Then, unplug.
We're going to assemble one side at a time, so start by finding the correct matching GT350 piece here. What we're actually going to do is flip this over, unscrew it and transfer it over. Now, you don’t need to over-crank the screws. They don't ... The holes actually are not threaded, but they're just soft plastic, so the screws will cut into it as you put them in.
Moving over to our R wheel now, we're going to plug this one in first. Now, the top piece can go on. Now, you're going to do the same exact thing on the other side.
For the bottom piece here, all we need are the screws from the original. The wheel's ready to go back into our car.
We're going to start by fishing the airbag wires through the hole up here and then plug in the wheel. Make sure you line everything up. The harness should be in the center there. The two yellow tabs should be right there. With the wheel bolted down, make all the connections for the airbag. These are color coded, all yellow and black and yellow. You want to get it lined up with the springs. Push to re-install, and your installation is finished.
