On the SN95 Mustang one of the most common weatherstrip failures is going to be in the roof rail. The roof rail weatherstripping runs along the roof rail of your SN95 Mustang. When you close the door, your glass is going to rest up against it. When this starts to dry out or crack it's going to let air and water into your interior and make for a very unpleasant driving experience.
This is a very simple part to replace and today we're going to show you how. We're going to be installing OEM Ford weatherstrip, which makes the installation a lot easier since Ford is going to provide all the necessary clips needed for the installation itself. This is going to fit your 2000 through 2004 coupe, but '94 through '99 models are also available.
The roof rail weatherstrip is held in place by five clips here, one clip in the corner, and three more clips up front, along with a channel here and a channel across the roof rail itself. Honestly, you can just pull that out, but if some of the clips get stuck use a small pin removal tool to get them out.
I'm going through to make sure all the original clips are pulled out. I'm just going to make sure the channel is clear of any dirt, debris, or anything in there before we install the new weatherstrip. The weatherstrip is going to be nice and soft out of the box. If you're installing it in a cold climate in the wintertime though, try to put it out in the sun or even put it in the microwave for a few seconds just to warm it up. The softer it is, the easier it's going to be to install it into the channel here.
We're going to start by installing it up in the corner. This spike here is going to go right in that hole. You want to push in the center here to push the spike into place. You'll her it click in when you get it right. You want to basically work it down, just push it into the channel down here and install the five clips in the bottom of the door seal.
Now we're going to start working it in the channel up here. Don't worry if it doesn't go all the way in. You just want to get it as tight as you can and there's a trick to getting it all the way in that I'm going to show you in a second. When you get most of it in go down and put the front clips into place. This little edge here basically goes right up underneath the edge of the rail where the weatherstrip goes. Come back through and work it up in the channel as much as you can.
What you want to do is get in the car and put the window up. With the window up, push it the rest of the way in. Now go back through and make sure it's evenly pushed in across the entire rail. Repeat the process on the passenger side if you're replacing that as well and your installation is finished.
If your roof rail weatherstrip was bad, you're going to notice an immediate difference the first time you drive the car, especially the first time you drive it in the rain. As we said, the installation is very straightforward. It'll only take you a few minutes per side and you'll be back on the road in no time.
