Mustang Scott Drake Billet Shorty Radio Antenna (1965-1968) Installation Instructions

Tools Required:
  • Crescent Wrench
Install Difficulty:
  • Easy
  • Easy Project
1. The first step to installing your Mustang Scott Drake Shorty Antenna is to remove the old antenna (if you have one. My car did not). Unplug the antenna from the radio and pull the wire out from the heater box. Before you pull it through the fender, tape an old coat hanger to the plug. This will make it easier to pull the new wire through.
2. Use the crescent wrench to remove the nut at the top of the old Mustang radio. Hold the antenna mast to prevent it from falling into the fender. Lift the base off and discard. Slide the antenna down and lift the mounting bracket up and out of the fender. This will be the only part to be retained. Once that’s removed pull the antenna out of the fender and untape the wire from the coat hanger.
3. Because the previous owner of my car improperly removed the stock antenna, the mounting bracket was stuck inside the fender, and it had to be removed. I do not recommend removing the fender to do this. While it will make the installation much easier, you can very quickly have a one hour project turn into a one to two day ordeal.
4. Tape the wire to the coat hanger and pull it back through the fender. Don’t pull too much though or the antenna can fall in.

6. Press the Mustang Scott Drake antenna gasket onto the bottom of the round base and set it aside for now.

7. Tie a long string or wire around the tip of the Mustang antenna and thread a nut on to keep it in place. Use this to lower the antenna into the fender. The mounting bracket will have to be lifted and put through after. Once it’s in line up the bracket with the antenna. Keep the string tight until the nut is on. Be careful not to drop the string or you will need to remove the fender to get the antenna out. Picture is reference only.

8. Slide the round base over the wire to the Mustang fender. It will have a notch that lines up with the mounting bracket. Now do the same for the cone nut and thread it down hand tight.
9. You can now remove the string. Use a cloth under the crescent wrench to tighten the nut down.

10. Thread the mast onto the antenna base. That competes this part. The rest is inside the car.

11. Now pull the wire the rest of the way into the fender. Seat the grommet once it gets pulled in.
