Both our shocks and struts are going to be on-car adjustable as long as they're dialling for different driving editions, whether it be for road racing, drag racing or just cruising on the highway. For this installation we need a half inch impact gun, half inch ratchet, couple extensions, 15mm shallow socket, 15mm deep socket, 19mm deep socket, 21mm deep socket, 24mm deep socket, 13/16 deep socket, 18mm wrench, pry bar, and safety glasses.
We're going to start by doing the front struts. I'm going to get the hood opened so you can access the top strut bolt, and get the car high enough off the ground so it'll be easier to remove the front wheel. Now we want to put a jack underneath the control arm to support the string, and we're ready to loosen our bolts. We're going to start by removing the upper strut nut. You want to hold onto the strut itself, and use an impact gun to remove the nut.
We're going to start by removing the retaining nut that holds the bracket for our ABS line. Get the bracket off and push this off. Once you move the bracket out of the way you can see the two retaining nuts that hold the bolts in place that hold the strut to the spindle. You want to hold the bolts on this side, remove the nuts from this side. I'll remove the bolts that hold the strut to the spindle; you usually can push them out, but sometimes they need to be persuaded a little bit.
Just slide our strut out of place. Before we get rid of our old struts, I'll transfer the dust bed over as well as this rubber seal. Install the rubber lower seal and the dust boot on our new strut, and we're ready to install it. Now we're going to install it the same way we removed the original. It's not a bad idea to put the nut on top here just to hold it in place until we get it seated. Push this strut up a little bit, and push this spindle into place.
We're going to thread back on the nuts and we'll tighten everything up with our impact gun. Now we're going to install the bracket and the retaining nut. Then, I can remove the nut, reinstall the washers, and tighten the nut back down. Now, I'll slowly let down our jack and repeat the process on the other side. Install our wheel, and we'll get it back on the ground and torque them down.
KYB provides this screwdriver with their AGS adjustable struts. One is going to be your softest setting; simply turn it to adjust. With the four being the firmest setting overall, I usually suggest starting at two and then drive the car and get a feel for where you want the struts set up. Now we're going to move on to the rear shocks. Top shock bolt located right here so I'm going to start by opening the trunk, removing the side panel so we can access it.
Start by moving the carpet it over and remove our rear panel. Then we're going to remove the nut the pins, the shock, and the trunk floor. Then we're going to remove the lower nut and bolt for shocks in our in housing, and remove our shock. Start by installing this metal washer and the lower portion has the extension piece on it which will go through our floor. You want to make sure you bolt it in place just on the inside, so it's easier to adjust on the car. I'll install the nut and tighten it back up.
You want to make sure this lower portion is coming up through the trunk floor. If it isn't, put a jack beneath the rear and just lift it up and push it through. I'll install the bumper bushing. There's the washer. Can't get enough threads to get the nut started? Just get a washer and push it off. Thread the nut down a little bit, and just grab a pry bar just to bring it through the floor a little more.
I can reinstall our carpet panel, and then we'll repeat the process on the other side. The KYB AGX adjustable shocks and struts are the perfect choice for our aggressive ride height. The adjustability allows us to set it up for daily driving occasional autocross or even a trip down the drag strip. Figuring about three to four hours for installation, you'll be back on the road in no time.
