1. To start installing your new Mustang Carter M6588 Fuel Pump, disconnect the positive battery cable, which will eliminate any chance of the engine turning over while you are under the hood. Place a container or some absorbent material under the fuel pump area to control any spills. Clamp the incoming rubber fuel line with locking pliers to stop the fuel flow. Remove the clamp on the incoming fuel line with the screw driver or with pliers, if your Mustang still has the original spring type clamp pictured below. With the clamp removed, the hose should slip off with a little help from the pliers. Inspect the hose and replace it if it has cracks, wear, or signs of age. It’s a good idea to replace this inexpensive hose and both clamps at this time.

2. Use a 5/8-inch open end wrench to hold the Mustang fuel pump output while using a 1/2-inch wrench (line wrench preferred) to turn output line fitting counter clockwise. This should be a steel line running all the way to the carburetor. The one in the picture has had a rubber hose spliced to it. Inspect the steel line and replace it if it has kinks, wear, or any area that may be rubbed thin.

3. Now that both Mustang fuel lines are removed, use a 9/16-inch socket with extension to remove the two fuel pump retaining bolts. Remove the old fuel pump from the engine. This may require some prying with a screw driver.

4. Scrape off all the old Mustang fuel pump gasket material from the mounting flange on the engine, taking care not to drop any material inside. Wipe down the area to ensure a clean, smooth surface for the new gasket to adhere to. Apply a thin layer of gasket adhesive to one side of the gasket and apply the adhesive to the new fuel pump.

5. Align new Carter fuel pump and thread in the two retaining bolts by hand. Use a 9/16-inch socket to tighten the bolts. Do not over-tighten.
6. Reinstall the lines that were removed in steps 1 and 2. Remove the locking pliers that closed off the fuel flow. Start the engine and check for leaks. If there aren't any, the installation of your new Mustang Carter Fuel Pump is finished.
