Mustang Logo

• Designer Phil Clarke was only 27 when he sketched the original Mustang logo.

• Though the Mustang logo will always be identified with Ford, Clarke actually got his start at General Motors. He left for Ford in 1962 with the dream of creating a new breed of American sports car.

• The Mustang logo depicts a horse galloping to the left. Apparently this is because the right-handed Clarke found it easier to draw that way.

• Though the logo depicts a wild horse, the Mustang was actually named after the North American P-51 fighter plane, flown by the famous Tuskegee Airmen in World War II.

• Aside from designing the Mustang logo, Clarke had considerable input on the car's body as part of the team that designed and built the first prototype in a period of 100 days.

• Sadly, Clarke did not live to see the full impact his design made on the American consciousness. He died at 32 of a urinary disease.

50th Anniversary Mustang Logo

In March 2013, Ford announced an updated logo to celebrate the brand's 50th year in production. The new logo, created by Michael Thompson, was the result of an internal design competition. The logo, which updates the spirit of Phil Clarke's original with a modern twist, will be licensed exclusively to a group of 50 merchandisers to appear on everything from leather jackets to videogames.
