Mustang Rear Axle Shaft (1967-1970) Installation Instructions

Tools Required:
  • Floor Jack
  • Jack Stands
  • Wheel Wrench/Impact Wrench
  • Ratchet
  • Sockets
  • Drum Brake Adjustment Tool

1. To start installing your new Mustang Rear Axle Shaft, place wheel chocks in front of the front wheels. Raise the rear of the vehicle off of the ground and secure it with jack stands.
2. Using an impact wrench, remove the rear Mustang wheels.

3. Remove the Mustang rear brake drum by pulling it toward you. It may be necessary to back the brake adjuster off to remove the drum.
4. Remove the Mustang axle retainer plates. Rotate the axle until the hole in the axle lines up with the nut.

5. Remove Mustang axle by pulling it straight out.

6. New Mustang bearings will have to be pressed on to the new rear axle. Take your axle to an axle shop and have them press on new bearings and wheel studs.

7. Slide the new axle into housing. Rotate axle until the splines are aligned with the Mustang differential. Once the splines are aligned, the axle will fully seat itself in the housing. Once the axle has been seated, tighten the bolts on the wheel bearing retainer.

8. Finally, reinstall the brake drum and adjust the brakes until the shoes just begin to drag on the drum. Here is a look at the completed installation of your Mustang Rear Axle Shaft.
