Mustang SPEC Stage 2 11" Clutch Kit (1968-1973) Installation Instructions

Tools Required:
  • Floor Jack & Jack Stands
  • Chalk
  • Ratchet
  • Standard & Allen Socket Sets
  • Torque Wrench
  • Clutch Alignment Tool
  • Hammer
Install Difficulty:
  • Moderate
  • Moderate Project
1. To begin the installation of your new Mustang SPEC Clutch SF272 Stage 2 11" Clutch Kit, raise the vehicle off of the ground and secure with jack stands.
2. Remove the Mustang driveshaft. Use chalk to put indicator marks on the driveshaft and the yoke of the differential. This will ensure that it goes back in the same way that it was removed.

3. Unbolt the Mustang shifter and the speedometer cable. The shifter does not have to be removed (although it will be easier with it out of the way), but it does need to be unbolted from the transmission.

4. Remove the four bolts that secure the transmission to the Mustang bellhousing and unbolt the cross member. Support the transmission with a floor jack.

5. Slide the Mustang transmission out of the bellhousing.
6. Remove the Mustang starter and the bolts that secure the bellhousing to the block.
7. Remove the bellhousing. Please note that this picture was taken with the engine removed from the vehicle. It is NOT necessary to remove the Mustang engine.

8. Remove the bolts that secure the pressure plate to the Mustang flywheel. Once all bolts are removed the pressure plate and clutch can be removed from the flywheel. Inspect the flywheel for wear and resurface or replace if necessary. Caution: When the last bolt is removed the pressure plate will fall off of the flywheel. Be sure to secure the pressure plate before removing the last bolt.
9. Remove the old pilot bearing. To accomplish this fill the cavity inside the bearing with grease. (It is not necessary to remove the flywheel)

10. Next insert something into the pilot bearing that is the same diameter as the inside of the bearing. An old clutch alignment tool works well. It is not recommended to use the new clutch alignment tool that is included in the SPEC Clutch kit.

11. Snap off the ring on the end of the tool. Then tap the tool with a hammer. Since the grease will not compress it forces the bearing out. Once the tool has bottomed out on the bearing remove it and refill the void with more grease. Reinsert the tool and tap it with a hammer again. Repeat this process until the bearing comes out the entire way.

12. Install the pilot bushing. Find a socket that is slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the bushing. Then tap the bearing into the crankshaft until it bottoms out.

13. Next install your new Mustang clutch kit. Clean the flywheel and pressure plate surfaces with brake cleaner to remove any oils left over from the manufacturing process. Insert the supplied clutch alignment tool through the clutch and into the pilot bushing. The clutch is clearly mark as to which side goes towards the flywheel and which side goes towards the transmission.

14. With the Mustang clutch disc alignment tool still in place, install the pressure plate. Use the bolts that are included with the kit. The bolts should be torqued to 35 ft/lbs. Once the bolts are torqued, you can remove the alignment tool.

15. Reinstall the bellhousing and starter. The Mustang throwout bearing should be orientated on the clutch fork as shown in the picture below. Now adjust your clutch linkage so that the throwout bearing is not in constant contact with the pressure plate. Constant contact with the pressure plate will cause premature failure of the bearing.

16. Install the transmission. Using a floor jack, raise the transmission to a height that will allow it to pass directly through the throwout bearing and clutch, then into the pilot bushing. It may be necessary to turn the motor over (by hand) to get the splines to line up on the transmission input shaft and the clutch. Once everything has slid together, install the bolts that secure the transmission to the bellhousing, bolt the shifter back on, and reinstall the cross member. Finally reinstall the driveshaft, making sure that your chalk marks are aligned. After this, the installation of your new Mustang SPEC Clutch Stage 2 11" Clutch Kit is complete.
