Mustang vs. CamaroHere's a brief run-down of one of the most storied rivalries in the automotive world:
1964: Ford introduces the Mustang, which goes on to sell over a million units in less than two years. GM begins work on the Camaro, which debuts in 1967, and is described by Chevy representatives as "a small ferocious creature that eats Mustangs."
1969-1973: The Mustang vs. Camaro rivalry is played out on the track and in the showroom, as both manufacturers continue to offer more powerful engines until the early '70's oil crisis cooled consumer demand for high-displacement muscle cars.
1979/1982: Ford and Chevy, respectively, release third-generation offerings of their famous muscle cars, reflecting a renewed interest in performance and re-igniting the rivalry. In 1985, Chevy released the famous IROC-Z package for the Camaro to compete with the growing popularity of the Mustang's 5.0L V8 'Windsor' engine.
2002: Faced with flagging sales, GM discontinues the Camaro. Ford continues to soldier on, planning a major redesign with the introduction of the fifth-gen Mustang in 2005.
2009: With the latest Mustangs earning rave reviews for their performance and styling, Chevy re-introduces the Camaro for the 2010 model year.
Now, nearly a half-century later, the Mustang vs. Camaro debate seems to have come full circle, with both manufacturers offering stylish, high-displacement muscle cars with an equally ardent share of boosters and detractors. And with Ford planning a redesign of the Mustang for the 2015 model year, it seems like both manufacturers will be giving us plenty to argue about for years to come!
The 2015 Mustang: Camaro Killer?As all Mustang lovers know, this year marks an important anniversary for the brand. It was April 17, 1964, that the very first pony car became available to the automobile buying public, sparking a revolution in how we thought about sports cars, and, with the release of the Camaro two years later, a rivalry that persists to this day. To mark this anniversary, Ford is preparing the launch of an all-new Mustang, the sixth generation, which aims to poise the brand for another half-century of market dominance.
The 2015 Mustang is set to appear in showrooms in Fall, 2014, but has already made its public debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming pony car:
A global Mustang: The new Mustang is intended as a true-world beater, and will be promoted heavily in both Asian and European markets — for the first time ever, in the case of some countries.
Turbo-charged power: Perhaps as a result of this global strategy, the 2015 Mustang will offer a fuel-efficient 2.3L turbocharged 4 cylinder engine as an option placed between the base V6 and the big block V8. Thanks to Ford’s popular EcoBoost technology, the 4 cylinder is expected to deliver 305 horsepower and more torque than the V6.
IRS at last: In a development that has been anticipated for some time, the 2015 will offer an independent rear suspension for the first time ever, making it an even more attractive competitor vs. the Camaro. Mustang enthusiasts who prefer the old school feel of a live axle will still be able to purchase one as an option.
Shorter and squatter: Breaking with the retro-inspired styling cues that have dominated Mustang design for the past decade, the 2015 will be shorter, lighter and more aggressive than its forbears.
