With the cost of fuel these days, we get a lot of customers contacting us, looking for ways to lock their gas cap. Owners of newer Mustangs can simply get a locking cap with a key, but owners of classic Mustangs with a twist-off cap don't have that option. Scott Drake came up a unique solution with this twist-off gas cap lock for '65 through '73 Mustangs.

You might be looking at this wondering, "Where is the lock?" We're going to show you how to install it and how it works on the '67 Mustang Convertible. For this installation you need a punch, quarter-inch ratchet, quarter-inch extension, 7/16-inch socket, quarter-inch drill bit, drill, hammer, large wire cutters and safety glasses.

The first step is to remove your factory gas cap and remove the cable that comes with it. The cable is held on by this stud that goes through the trunk as a retaining nut on the inside. Remove that and remove our cap.

Once you remove the gas cap, the next step is to remove the security cable. The cable is pretty heavy duty, so it might take you are few cuts to get through it. Once you're through, just pull it through and remove it. We're going to have to drill a hole, this metal ring inside our gas cap for the locking rod to go through it.

The next step is to put the cap back on and we're going to mark it from the inside. We're going to make sure you have the cap perfectly straight. Now we're going to make the hole from the inside. We're ready to drill our hole. Now we're going to drill a quarter-inch hole on the plate at the back of the gas cap. You want to make sure you don't go all the way through the cap.

The kit comes with this bracket that's designed to mount through the support next to the filler neck in your trunk. This will fit on to a '65 to '66 Mustang with no modifications. For any other year, the bracket's going to have to be modified to make it work. We have to flatten it out so it'll reach the bracket in our '67's trunk.

If you have a vice handy, that would be the easiest way to do it, but if not, the bracket's pretty soft, you can simply hit it with a hammer. I'm going to put the lock rod through a modified bracket, and put it through the hole where we removed the bolt. I’m going to find a location to mount the bracket where the rod moves nice and smoothly, once you have a location, you want to punch it, and we'll drill a hole. Now we'll install the supplied speed nut over the hole that we just drilled.

Now we're ready to install the lock rod and the bracket. We're going to put the rod through the smaller hole in the bracket. Slide the spring over, and put the cotter pin through the lock rod. Bend the tab over. We're going to fish the lock rod through the hole. We're going to bolt in the bracket. To re-install your gas cap, we're going to pull back on the spring and put the cap on, turn it, and it'll lock in place. To remove it, simply pull back on the spring. Installation should take you roughly an hour, and you'll be back on the road in no time.
