On a 2015 Regular Cab 2wd Long bed Silverado: 1) Wouldnt disconnecting the battery be easier and less risk to damage of parts? 2) The lower leveling kit seems more desirable for installation ease. Wht advantage dothe upper kits offer over theslower ones?

By Bill Tumas: Behind me is a 2015 Silverado, and when you get a new truck, one thing you'll probably notice is that there's a slight rake to it. The front is lower than the rear. One way to fix that is with a leveling kit. In front of me is the Rough Country 2 inch leveling kit. What this kit will do is lift the front 2 inches leveling it with the rear which will allow you to run a bigger tire up to 32 inches and will give you increased ground clearance without having to disassemble the strut. You'll be able to maintain the factory ride quality.

This leveling kit will fit 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive Sierra and Silverado 1500's from 2007 -2016. However, Rough Country offers 2 versions, one for steel control arms and the other for aluminum control arms. You want to make sure which setup you have before ordering the kit. This is a 100% bolt on kit. Each kit comes with everything that you need. The only difference between each kit is the hardware itself.

For this installation, you will need a lift or a jack and jack stands, a 3/8 ratchet, a 10 millimeter socket, a 15 millimeter socket, a 17 millimeter socket, a 21 millimeter socket, an extension, a torque wrench, a 15 millimeter wrench, a 17 millimeter wrench, and 18 millimeter wrench, a flat head screwdriver, a 7/32 Allen key, and a hammer.

Like I said earlier, there's 2 kits available for this truck, one for steel control arms and the other for aluminum. There's a really simple way to find out which ones you have. Take a magnet, stick it on. If the magnet sticks, you have steel control arms. If it doesn't, you have aluminum. Once you've figured that out, you have to see if you have electric power steering or not because you have to disconnect the connectors going to the unit if you have electric power steering.

In our case, we do have power steering. In order to disconnect the power steering we have to remove the skid plate. There's 4 10 millimeter bolts securing the skid plate on. Once you remove the skid plate, there's 3 connectors on the power steering unit that you have to remove. These 2 connectors right here are the exact same connector type and then here is a different one. Pop that out. Like I said, this connector is the same one as the connector up here, so this is the same process as the one up there. Once you have this pulled out, pull the connector off. Now we have all 3 connectors disconnected.

Now that we have the connectors disconnected on the power steering assembly, we're going to loosen up the top strut mounts. We don't have to take these nuts completely off, you just have to loosen them to allow the strut to maneuver when you're installing the new spacer. Like I said, you don't have to completely remove these nuts. All you have to do is loosen them to allow for adjustability.

Now we have to remove the tie rod from the steering knuckle. We removed the nut on the tie rod, but the tie rod is still in the knuckle. To remove the tie rod from the knuckle, you have to hit the knuckle with a hammer. Do not hit the threads or the rod with a hammer ever. You want to hit the knuckle itself.

Now we have to remove the sway bar end link. It's a 15 millimeter nut on top and a 15 millimeter bolt on the bottom. I am by myself, so I have a socket on the bottom and I have the wrench lodged against the strut. Next, we're going to loosen the upper control arm nut. You don't have to take it completely off, but we are going to loosen it just to allow some adjustability. With the nut loose on the upper control arm, we have to hit the knuckle with the hammer to loosen it. You don't want to hit the control arm or the threads with the hammer. Only hit the knuckle.

Now we're going to remove the lower strut bolts. They're 2 15 millimeter bolts. You can toss these bolts aside because you won't be using them. Toss this bolt aside as well. Next, you have to remove these clips that are on top of the strut so you can put on the new hardware. Just get a screwdriver in there and twist it.

Now it's time to install the spacer. You're going to install it just like this with the thin part facing towards the middle of the truck. Pull down on the hub, slide the spacer under the strut, get it lined up and you can put your bolts through. Now we're going to install the bolts. This one underneath the axle, we're going to install with the bolt going up. It's hard to get the bolt up here to go down. With the bolt all the way through get your washer on, drop the bolt a little bit. Get the nut on and then thread it on. You can go to the other side. Don't tighten this just yet. You want to have some slack so you can do the other bolt. Put the washer and the nut on the bottom. Tighten it up.

To tighten these, they are a different size. They are 17's so you need the 17 millimeter wrench and a 17 millimeter socket. You're going to tighten these to the factory torque spec. Now we're going to torque these bolts down to 35 foot pounds. Now we're going to reinstall the sway bar end link. Now, tighten the sway bar end link. Now it's time to reinstall the tie rod. Get this nut on then you can get a 10 millimeter socket on here and tighten the nut.

Now it's time to tighten the upper control arm nut. You get a 7/32 Allen key or hex key whatever you like to call it. Stick it in the bottom of the bolt and then tighten the nut. Now we have to re-tighten the nuts on top of the strut. Now you just have to repeat this same process on the other side, reconnect your power steering and then install the splash guard.

Now that you've installed the spacers on both sides and plugged in the connectors on the power steering unit, you can reinstall the splash guard. Now the installation is complete. Just put the truck back on the ground and make sure you put the wheels back on.

All right. The installation of our leveling kit is complete. Our truck has a little bit extra attitude and some extra ground clearance. Before you do anything, you need to take your truck to an alignment shop or you'll have uneven tire wear. Installation for this kit should take between 2 and 3 hours.
