Second Generation Mustang Parts

The second generation Ford Mustang — known as the Mustang II — was a radical reinvention of the vehicles that preceded it. In response to declining sales and growing consumer concern about the price of gas, the Mustang was re-imagined as a smaller, more fuel-efficient car, though later models retained some of the original's pony car bona fides.

Second Generation Mustang Parts

Second Generation Mustang Engines and Body Styles

Based on the Ford Pinto, the Mustang II was designed to compete against the Toyota Celica and Datsun 240Z. Though controversial today, the car was an initial sales success, selling almost 500,000 units in the first two years.

The second generation Mustang swapped the iconic fastback for a longer hatchback model and ditched the convertible entirely. For the 1974 model year, just two engines were available — a 140 cu. in. I4 and a 178 cu. in. V6. It would be the only year in the Mustang's history in which a V8 was not available.

Performance enthusiasts, who bemoaned the Mustang II's lack of power, were heartened the following year when Ford introduced an optional 302 cu. in. V8 with a top speed of 106 mph.
