Mustang Steering Wheel Reproduction Black Correct For Alternators 1965-1966

Correct Style Reproduction Steering Wheel for 1965-1966 Mustangs Using an Alternator.

These beautiful reproduction steering wheels are made with injected molded plastic just like the originals. Available in all the correct factory colors.
Today we’re going to continue with the interior upgrades of our Weekend Wrench project car by replacing our steering wheel. The current steering wheel on the car has an aftermarket cover on it and it’s got a lot of cracks underneath it as well. Our horn ring has also seen some better days, so we’re going to go with a Scott Drake chrome horn ring; one of our reproduction original style steering wheels.

Our black plastic steering wheel is an exact reproduction of the original. The horn ring from Scott Drake we’re going with has all the detail we’ve come to expect from their products; the correct paint in the circles, as well as the highly detailed paint in the Ford Mustang as well as the correct logo.

For this installation you’ll need a steering wheel puller, ½-inch ratchet, short extension, 15/16th socket, 3/8 ratchet, ½-inch socket and an adjustable wrench.

See our original horn ring is in really rough shape. All the chrome’s off the top here. It’s flaking down here. The paint is falling off. Our wheel has this cheap plastic cover on it to cover up all the cracks. It’s definitely time for an upgrade.

The first step is going to be to remove our original horn ring. ou’ll disconnect your battery before you get started that way the horn’s not going off as you remove it. To remove it you simply press in and turn. You’ll want to make sure you grab the spring; you’ll want to use that with our new pieces.

Now, you’re going to remove the bolt that holds the wheel to the column. You’ll want to hold the wheel and the wrench kind of at the same time to get it to come off.

At this point, you’re most likely going to need a steering wheel puller. Sometimes the wheel may come off. Most times you’ll need the puller. Ours isn’t budging. We’re going to use our steering wheel puller to get it out. We’ll start by lining up the plate here. We’ll put our screws through. These don’t have to be threaded in all the way. You just want them in far enough to get a good grip on the wheel so we can pull it out.

Now we’re ready to get our new steering wheel. You want to make sure that you have the wheel as centered as possible when you remove it and install the new one the same way. I’ll line up our new wheel, press it down on the spring and put our retaining bolt back on. Now we’ll tighten the retaining nut down and again hold the wheel while you turn the wrench. The new horn ring comes ready to install. You line up the three tabs from the retainer with these three openings here and make sure you install the original spring first. Push it flat and you’ll feel it pop in, applying pressure, just turn and it’ll lock in to place.

Now that our horn ring is installed, we will reconnect our battery to make sure our horn works; (honk honk) and check if the turn-signals cancel and our installation is finished.

Our new horn ring and steering wheel really freshened up the look of our interior. Installation should only take you about half an hour. You’ll be back on the road in no time.

Getting this wheel made a big improvement in looks compared to the original cracked and split one. Looks fantastic!

I have to say I'm fairly disappointed in it's quality and finish. The wheel has blemishes, there are several edges that look as if they didn't bother to buff or smooth once they pulled it from mold. The cam on the wheel that resets the turn signal switch isn't secured and can be easily spun(can't budge the cam on original wheel) Remains to be seen if it will move out of place under normal use. Original horn ring indexes off center slightly(didn't do this with the original wheel). As the title states, disappointed.

The steering wheel looks good. I just don't like the color of it. I wanted a light blue wheel but it don't look blue to me. Its still a nice looking wheel to me. It don't look like the color in the pic on the computer.

I orders dark blue, but it looks more grey. Nothing like the original. If you want blue, I would look elsewhere.
