Well, the first thing you'll want to do is disconnect your battery. Once you do that, we're going to start on the passenger side. We have to remove this panel here and then the kick panel to access the wiring. To remove this panel, just reach underneath here, give it a good tug and it'll pop right up. Same thing with the kick panel; pull up, pull out. What you want to do now is lift up right where this metal tab is that holds your weather stripping in place. If you look, there's a little cutout right here and also right here. This is where we're going to take the wire from our door sill plate up over inside and then up to the kick panel to connect it.
Now, these are side-specific. The wire is going to come off the front of the door sill plate. What you're going to do is kind of just line it up in the plastic. Get an idea of where it's going to go. It's going to be right there, then sort of feed the wire through the area where it's going to pass. Now, we're going to prep our factory door sill plate for installation. Now, if you've ever put Armor All, silicone, anything to make these shiny, you have to get some dish soap mixed together with some water and clean this thoroughly to give it more of a rough texture. In our case, we know ours are stock. We've never done that with them, so we're going to go right to some alcohol to clean the surface. Again, focus on, obviously, where the tape is going to sit.
With the surface clean, I'm going to peel back our red tape now. Now, before we install it, we're going to use the adhesion promoter provided with the kit. Now, this is not a cleaner. All this is going to do is just basically make it adhere better. It's almost like a primer. What you want to do is make sure it is clean and don't touch this stuff, either. Just take the top of it off like that and then wipe it on the area. Give it a couple seconds to set up. Flip it back over, make sure it's lined up, and push it down. Just hold it for 20 or 30 seconds, make sure it's nice and adhered. Now you can move on to the wiring.
What we're going to do now is disconnect this plug right here. Lift up on this plastic tab. Once you have it disconnected, the wire we want to use is right on the end here ... pull it out a bit more. It's going to be a gray wire with a purple tracer. This is going to have power when the doors are open for a dome light, courtesy light, or whatever. It's the perfect choice to plug in for our door sill lights. We're going to get power from here and then get ground from this bracket right here. Now, what I suggest doing here is actually not what I did. I would suggest using a wiretap. Unfortunately, when we tried to put the tap on, we actually cut through the wire by mistake, so we're going to use a butt connector to make the connection. But, don't cut through the wire, just get a wiretap and tap in that way.
I'm going to put a terminal on the ground wire. I'll remove this nut, here, and this will be our ground. Now, before we put everything back together, connect the negative and see if it works ... connect our ground. If it's connected, it should light up. I should mention, when you do the driver's side, it's the exact same process. You can fish the wires across the dash and make the same connections over on this side and connect them both in the same place. With everything good, we can reinstall the kick panel and then we'll line up and reinstall the inner door sill and your installation is finished.
These stainless steel door sill plates from American Car Craft will add a nice custom touch to the interior of any base model 2015 through 2017 Mustang. Now, I should mention they're available in the red shown here, also available in a white or a blue. These are made in the USA and a fairly easy installation. There is some wiring involved, but figure about one or two hours and be back on the road in no time.
