AWE Cat-Back Exhaust System SwitchPath Stainless Steel 3" With Chrome Silver Tips Focus RS 2016-2017 Video Transcript
By Bill Tumas: We recently told you about AWE Tuning, who's huge in the European market, and is now offering exhaust systems for your RS exclusively here at CJ Pony Parts. We showed their Touring edition and their Track edition, at that time I mentioned there was a system that was the best of both worlds, and that is the SwitchPath system shown here.

The SwitchPath is going to be adjustable and have different modes just like your factory exhaust system, and today we're going to install it on our 2016 Focus RS.

Like the other AWE tuning exhaust systems available here at CJ Pony Parts for your RS, the SwitchPath system is made of 3" 304 stainless steel front to back, with full mandrel bends. The nice thing with the SwitchPath, or the unique thing I should say, is it works just like your factory system.

It includes an adjustable motor that will work with the factory wiring and allows you to choose two different modes for the exhaust. One of a quieter version, and one of a louder version.

There's also two option tips available for this system. Your choice of a 4" polished chrome tip or a 4" diamond black tip.

The SwitchPath system out of the box will work with your factory drive mode. Now, if you want the option to change the sound of the exhaust without changing drive mode, the SwitchPath controller is available separately. This allows you to change the sound of the exhaust using one of the included remote controls.

For this installation, you'll need a lift or a jack and jack stands, 3/8" ratchet, 11mm socket, 15mm socket, 16mm socket, exhaust hanger removal tool, Sawzall, and safety glasses.

Since our Focus already has an aftermarket exhaust on it, we're going to show you a quick clip on how to remove your factory exhaust before beginning installing your AWE SwitchPath.

To remove the exhaust, the first thing you want to do is remove the actuator for the active system, and make sure you don't damage it. You can now unplug that and then bolt that and put that aside. Now you can remove the exhaust.

To do that, like I said, you do have to cut it. What you want to do is right here in front of the rear axle, right in this section here. Going to cut that down the middle, that way you can separate the two pieces, and remove the exhaust.

We start by installing the front pipe here. This part can be a little bit frustrating. This clamp can be a little bit difficult to work with. You sort of have to get the pipe to pop into place, but if you twist it and just push a little bit, it'll eventually pop in.

Okay, once the clamp is in place, make sure this little spacer here is filling this opening, and the tab is lined up. Then tighten it down.

All right, now we can install the mid-pipe. You want to put a clamp on the front. Make sure the clamp's orientation, that the bolt is actually on the driver's side away from the driveshaft. It makes it easier to tighten it.

All right, now we're going to snug up the clamp. Leave it a little bit loose, we'll come back later and adjust everything once the entire system is installed.

Next is the over axle pipe. Again, put the clamp somewhere where you can get to it and keep it away from everything, and this comes in from the back. Install the pipe, and then install on the factory hanger. Once again, snug up the clamp.

Now we're going to put the clamp on the muffler assembly. Then install both hangers. I find they're easier to install on here than on the car. All right, now snug up the clamp here.

All right, now we're going to hang the active part of the system and put the clamp up into place. Put that where we want it and snug it down. Now, the passive side. Then snug up the clamp.

Okay, now finally you can install the tips. Okay, now go back through, make any adjustments, and tighten down the system.

Now, we're going to plug in the SwitchPath harness. Fish the wire over to the controller, and plug it in. Tie the wire safely out of the way, and your installation is finished.

Now, if you're running the optional SwitchPath controller, you're going to unplug the extension cable we just installed. You're going to plug this side in here, and plug that into the extension cable we already installed. Tie everything else up out of the way.

As we've come to expect with AWE, the system fits great. Now, let's hear how it sounds. We're going to start with the valve closed. At idle it pretty much sounds like a stock focus, maybe even a little bit quieter. Get a little bit of sound out of it, but nothing crazy. Now, let's open the valve. Even at idle you can hear it gets a little deeper and throatier. Yeah, it's a lot louder. Probably twice as loud. It gives you the sound of one of the more aggressive exhaust systems, yet at the switch of a button, you make it quiet again.

Like I mentioned before, the SwitchPath kind of gives you the best of both worlds. You can put it in the quieter mode, where honestly like I said, I don't even think it's as loud as this car is stock. Which, you're leaving your development early in the morning, don't want to bother your neighbors, it's the perfect choice.

Now, you get out, you want to have a little bit of fun with the car, hit a switch, all of a sudden that car goes up a whole octave louder. More than that actually. It makes a lot of difference. It sounds really good. I would say it's probably somewhere around the volume of the Touring. It's definitely not as loud as the Track edition, but it sounds good. It has a good tone to it. It's definitely plenty loud, but then, yeah, when you hit that switch, it's gone. Like, literally, it is quiet in here. In giving the gas, you get a little bit of sound out of it, but not a heck of a lot. Hit the switch or, again, change the drive mode, and all of a sudden the car gets a little more attitude to it.

I'm going to say it's maybe a shade quieter than the Touring actually, because the Touring you get a little pop at higher RPMs. You really aren't getting that with the SwitchPath system. Very similar tone, just maybe a little bit quieter.

Like the other systems, though, highway speed? It goes away. This one, it's a little deeper at highway speeds than I would say the other system is, but you're not getting any drone out of it. Yeah, right now we're at 2000 RPM, and, like I said, you can hear it, it has a little bit of a deep sound to it, but it's definitely not droning. If even that bothers you, hit the switch and it goes away completely.

I'm using the remote control because we have it set up for that right now, but if you're not using the optional SwitchPath you simply use the drive mode on the car, it makes the same changes.

Yeah, if you're looking to have that option between having a quiet exhaust system or a little bit of a noticeable aftermarket sound to your Focus, this is really an excellent way to go.

The AWE Tuning SwitchPath really does give you the best of both worlds. If you need the car quiet, say you're sneaking out of your neighborhood in the morning going to work or whatever, you put it in the quiet mode, it sounds basically like a stock Focus. Get on the road, hit the switch, and all of a sudden it's a whole new car. It gets a whole new attitude.

The installation's pretty straight forward with or without the SwitchPath controller it's a two-hour install, you'll be back on the road in no time.
