AWE Cat-Back Exhaust System Track Edition Stainless Steel 3" With Chrome Silver Tips Focus RS 2016-2017 Video Transcript
By Bill Tumas: We recently introduced you to AWE Tuning and their high-end exhaust system for the Focus RS, available here exclusively at CJ Pony Parts. Now, that was their touring system, and I mentioned during the time, there was a louder system available, which was the Track Edition. This is the Track Edition shown here, and today we're gonna install it on our 2016 Focus RS. The Track Edition will definitely be a louder, more aggressive sounding system than the Touring Edition we showed you. Where the Touring Edition uses a large rear-mount muffler, the rear of the Track Edition is basically just a muffler delete, using just a resonator in the front to tone the sound down a little bit. I've actually heard the RS with no exhaust and think it sounds pretty good, so this system should be pretty good on the car. Just like the Touring system, it's made here in the USA of all mandrel bent 304 stainless steel, with your choice of a 4" polished chrome tip, or a 4" diamond black tip.

For this installation you'll need a lift or jack and jack stands, 3/8" ratchet, 11mm socket, 15mm socket, 16mm socket, exhaust hanger removal tool, Sawzall, and safety glasses. Now, our Focus already had an aftermarket exhaust on it, so we're gonna show you a quick clip on how to remove the factory exhaust before we begin installing our AWE. To remove the exhaust, the first thing you want to do is remove the actuator for the active system. Make sure you don't damage it. You can unplug that and unbolt that and put that aside. Now you can remove the exhaust. To do that, like I said, you do have to cut it. What you want to do is go right here in front of the rear axle, right in this section here. Gonna cut that down the middle, that way you can separate the two pieces and remove the exhaust.

First part of the installation is to install this front resonator. Now, this will be probably the most frustrating part of this installation. The factory clamp can sometimes be difficult to work with, but you sort of have to work the pipe in and it'll kind of pop into place when you have it right, and then tighten down the clamp. I have the clamp seated, we can tighten it down. The one thing you want to make sure of, there's a little piece here that basically covers this opening and there's a tiny slot, make sure that's lined up before you tighten it down. Okay, now we move on to the mid-pipe. I'm gonna grab the mid-pipe and a clamp. You want to orient the clamp away from the driveshaft, so slide that on. And seat it in the hanger. Now we're gonna snug this up. You don't want to tighten it all the way, but get it snug enough so it doesn't move.

Next we're gonna install the over axle pipe. Again, put a clamp on the front, make sure it's orientated a way you can get to it, and you're gonna put this over from the back. And again, put the clamp on and snug it down. Now we're ready to install the rear part of the exhaust. We found it's easier to take the factory hangers, put them on this pipe, and then put it up into place. Don't forget the clamp. Now, once again, snug the clamp up. Now we can move on to the tips. Now grab the tip and the clamp included, and get it where you want it, and snug it down. Okay, now go back and make your final adjustments and tighten everything down.

Okay, once everything's installed, the last step is to grab the delete plug, plug that in, and your installation is finished. The Track Edition was easy to install and looks great. Now let's see how it sounds. It has a nice deep kind of rumbly tone at idle. Actually not as loud as I thought it would be compared to the Touring Edition, actually it sounds really good. Now let's take it out on the road and hear how it sounds out there. First thing I'm gonna say about the Track Edition from AWE, especially at lower RPM's, it is the deepest one I've heard so far. And with just having a resonator and no muffler in the back, it obviously is loud outside. When you're driving it, it really has a deep tone inside of the car. Now, just like the other system here we are 2,000 RPM, anything that's gonna drone is going to. Cruising on the highway speeds, there's no drone. It really is pretty impressive. Now the sound, like if you get on it shows up, but when you hold an RPM, you don't get a drone. The sound of the exhaust actually goes away until you hit the throttle, which I think is pretty cool. So definitely no issues at all at highway speeds. Just down until you get on it, then the sound comes back.

While it is ... yeah, the Track Edition is designed to be louder than a Touring, and it does have a little more volume, but it isn't a huge, huge difference. The difference I'm finding is more in the crackle of the exhaust and the depth. I mean, this is boomier than the Touring system, for sure. In the Touring, where you would rev it up and then get off, you'd usually get like one pop for the exhaust; this one you get several. It's almost like gunfire when you get off of it. Pretty cool sound, I actually like it. Because it only does it at high RPM, for normal driving it doesn't do it at all. Yeah, the Touring definitely has a higher pitch to it. You hear the turbo on both of them, they both really bring the turbo sound out of the car, but the pitch is definitely different. This is deeper, boomier. I know I've said that a couple times now, but it's the best way I can describe it. It's just, it's a lower octave than the Touring system. It definitely pops more. If you have an RS and don't laugh every time ... you know, get a smile on your face every time that exhaust crackles, you bought the wrong car.

I had mentioned at one point that I actually like the way the RS sounds without exhaust on it, so I was excited to see how the Track Edition would sound since it only has a resonator. I'm actually very happy with the end result. The resonator dulls it down just enough that it's not over the top, but still allows that loud sound from the turbo to come through. Lots of crackles too, so it gives you a really fun sound when you're driving it. The installation's pretty straight forward. Figure no more than about two hours; be back on the road in no time.
