Novice skill is required for this installation.
The BAKFlip MX4 comes with heavy duty aluminum panels in a matte finish and features a foam core along with heavy duty latches and high quality seals. This particular version's going to fit your 2015 through 2017 F150 or Raptor with a 5'6" short bed.
For this installation you're going need a 3/8 ratchet, 9/16 socket, Phillips head screwdriver, panel removal tool, scissors, drill, and a 7/8 drill bit.
We'll begin the installation right here on the front edge of the bed. Now, if you have a spray-on liner or a bare bed, you're going to use this seal across the front here. If you have a plastic liner, you will not need this. What we're going to do is start on the plastic edge here and go across on the back edge on the front here. Again, put it right up against the plastic on the back edge. Then we're going to cut off the excess.
With the seal installed, now we can move on to the side rails. Now the rails are side specific. This metal frame's going to go to the front. There's going to be a seal on the edge here that will go up on the edge of the bed. What we're going to do is put that down and push it all the way forward so it's touching, and then install the supplied clamps. As you tighten these down, make sure you're pressing down on the rail. Just get them snug. You don't have to over-crank them. Then we're going to install one further up in the front here. Then push down and tighten it. And repeat the process on the other side.
We're going to carefully bring our cover up and lay it across the rails. All right, with the cover just laying in place, I'm going to grab these little clamps. These are for the straps that will hold our BAKFlip up. I'm going to make sure this end is facing the back. He's going to go right here. Put these little inserts in from the back.
Now you want to fold your BAKFlip up and see where it actually is hitting the cab, and then we're going to install some bumpers. We'll start with the one right here in the middle, and put some on the sides as well. Make sure you put these far enough in they don't interfere at all with the side rails.
Now we're ready to align our BAKFlip. We're going to remove this hardware from this bolt, leaving just one of the rubber seals on it, and it goes right through here. Do the same thing on the other side. All right, now you need to put the rubber washer, metal washer, lock washer, and then the thumb screw. Just get it snug enough, because you still have to move it to adjust.
Now we're going to fold our BAKFlip out here so we can make our final adjustments. Now I'm going to lift the gate up and check back here. I'm just going to bump it forward a little bit. Once the cover's adjusted, now we're going to flip everything forward so we can go up front and tighten it down. I'm going to tighten this up by hand until the lock washer flattens out.
With it folded up, now we're going to install the prop rod. It's like a strut. It clips right into there. The last step is the included drains. They're going to connect right up here and then go down through these panels. You've got to remove these panels so we can drill a hole.
What we're going to do now is drill a 7/8" hole right through here for the drain hose to go through. It's only plastic. It's not hard to drill, and the uni bit will make it a little bit easier. Now we'll reinstall these panels, connect the drain to our BAKFlip, and then put it through the hole we just drilled, and repeat the process on the other side.
Now we're going to fold everything back one more time to make sure everything's good, double check all of our clearances. When it latches in, you want to make sure the latch gets nice and deep in that groove. You don't want it right on the edge. Make sure everything's right, and your installation's finished.
Because these shift folded up, you might see a couple little wrinkles like this. Don't worry. When it's out in the sun they'll completely go away. But if it does bother you, grab a hair dryer or a heat gun on low head. Just run it over and it'll soften it up and get rid of that wrinkle.
There's three ways you can use your BAKFlip MX4. Obviously, you can have it closed like this. Unlike a lot of tonneau covers, this one you actually don't have to lift it up. You can close it just like that as there's a seal on the bottom of this that seals up against our tailgate. You can also open it that way.
Now when you fold it, there's two different ways you can use it folded up. Fold the cable underneath and move it over. Then you can go to this point, where this will stay locked. What you do is take these straps here, just connect that like that, pull it tight. Do the same on both sides. That way you can use it with just the back half open. If you want it open all the way, simply pull the cable, and flip it again. Then remove the stands from the side, loosen that, slide that down, tighten it up. Again, do the same from the other side, and then you can use it in the up position.
The BAKFlip MX4 is an excellent choice for your F150. It's extremely well made, so it'll be very durable, and does a great job of sealing off the bed as well. The installations definitely not bad. Figure about an hour and a half to two hours, and you'll be back on the road or off the road in no time.
