Ram 2500/3500 Parts
Since its founding all the way back in 1914, the Dodge brand has been on the cutting edge of developing pickup trucks to meet the latest trends in the automotive industry. From the days of the Power Wagon in the post-war era to the “Adult Toys” line in the 1970s, Dodge has always left no stone unturned to meet the demands of the ever-changing American consumer.
In the face of harsh financial times, Dodge made a last gasp to turn things around in the early 1980s with the introduction of the Ram truck line. Nearly 40 years and a host of accolades and awards later, it is clear that Ram trucks are not going anywhere, as its distinct comfort and power characteristics have resonated with truck enthusiasts across the globe.
Outside of a few aesthetic and engine modifications, Dodge shied away from making too many changes to the Ram truck throughout its First Generation. Along with having its light-duty truck featured on the hit TV show Walker Texas Ranger and driven by Chuck Norris himself, the further development of the Dodge Ram 2500 & 3500 models significantly helped move the brand forward.
For the 1994 redesign, Dodge drew a clear line between its light and Heavy Duty pickups in an effort to distinguish the 1500 half-tons from the Ram 2500 & 3500 models. The all-new Ram 2500 & 3500 models helped launch the Dodge brand into the ultra-competitive Heavy Duty truck race with its rivals from Chevrolet and Ford.
The Dodge Ram 2500 & Ram 3500 pickups progressed into the New Millennium and were cornerstones of the Ram’s Third and Fourth Generations, respectively. Let’s take a closer look at some of the innovations and major milestones in which the Ram 2500 & 3500 trucks have accomplished over the years.
The genesis of the Ram 1500’s third generation took place in the 2002 model year, but the Dodge Ram 2500 & 3500 pickups would have to sit idly for another year before they could enjoy their latest makeover. The company cited the 5.7 Hemi engine not being ready for production as a primary reason for the delay.
With so much excitement on the way, however, the wait was well worth it for fans of Dodge Heavy Duty trucks! The 5.7L Hemi delivered 345 hp (257.3 kW) and 398lb-ft of torque to the wheels while helping the Ram 2500 and Dodge Ram 3500 keep pace with its Heavy Duty rivals from both Ford and Chevrolet. One year after its introduction, the Hemi V8 became the only gasoline motor available for Ram Heavy Duty trucks, as both the 2500 & 3500 typically went the diesel route for much of the Third and Fourth Generations.
In addition to the engine options, the Third Generation Ram 2500 & 3500 pickups enjoyed a number of interior modifications that helped set them apart from Dodge Heavy Duty trucks from yesteryear. The new-look inner cabin combined with the rugged, heavy-duty frame helped establish the Ram 2500 & Dodge Ram 3500 models as two of the finest pickups in its class.
The Ram 2500 & 3500 pickups wasted little time asserting themselves in the Third Generation, as the Dodge Ram Heavy Duty line claimed the 2003 Motor Trend Truck of the Year Award. Four years after the dawn of the Ram 2500 and 3500’s biggest refresh to date, Dodge introduced the 6.7L Cummins motor as an engine option. The 6.7L turbo diesel replaced outdated 5.9L diesel motor, much to the delight of Dodge owners everywhere. Paired with the innovative six-speed transmission, the 6.7L Cummins increased the Ram 2500 and 3500’s horsepower by 25 and torque ratings by 40lb-ft.
Fourth Generation: A New Beginning
The year 2010 proved to be a game changer for Ram trucks and for all who enjoy them. They had become so prominent that “Ram Trucks” became a separate brand that was entirely separate from the Dodge nameplate. The exciting change brought about even more innovations to the Ram Heavy Duty line, which could be spotted throughout all phases of the 2500 and 3500 pickups.
A new suspension and a host of engine options dazzled American-made pickup aficionados across the market and paved the way for the Ram Heavy Duty line to claim its second Motor Trend Truck of the Year recognition in 2010. Along with the sturdier frame and changes under the hood, the alterations to the inner cabin as a result of the generational flip had truck fans buzzing.
With the famed quad cab no longer available beginning in the Fourth Generation, the organization replaced it with the all-new crew cab option. The Ram Heavy Duty line continued its excellence throughout the 2010s and introduced a number of modernizations that were new to the industry throughout the Fourth Generation. For the 2013 refresh, both the Ram 2500 & 3500 welcomed electronic stability control as a standard feature for the first time. That same year, the Ram became the first North American pickup to have a keyless ignition feature.
For the 2014 model year, the option of air suspension became available for Ram 2500 & 3500 pickups, and the two Heavy Duty trucks featured coil spring suspension for the first time as well. Also in 2014, the Ram 2500 & 3500 trucks received a slew of changes throughout the interior & the body, most notably, a sleeker and more comfortable inner cabin.
Over the next several years, the company unveiled a plethora of trim options for the Ram Heavy Duty trucks, including an Off-Roading Package in 2017, which built off of the success of some of the off-roading features introduced the previous year. As its name suggests, the Off-Roading Package featured several trailblazing features, including a unique suspension and front tow hooks, along with a number of armor & protection features.
The Ram Heavy Duty line ushered in the Fifth Generation for the 2019 model year, led by the all-new 5.L Hemi V8motor with the latest eTorque technological capabilities. The V8 motor produces roughly 35 hp and 410lb-ft of torque with an additional 130lb-ft of eTorque.
With the many engine options, the four corner air suspension, and the active air dam all being staples of the Fifth Generation, the future has never been brighter for Ram Heavy Duty trucks!
