Designing and building closely related pickup trucks has been commonplace for General Motors for over half a century. Using both the GM and Chevrolet nameplates, General Motors has always prided itself on being able to develop similar vehicles that fit a wide variety of driver needs. Ever since the early 1960s, GM has manufactured the half-ton Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra side-by-side, and the two vehicle cousins have developed their own distinct identities over the years.
Shortly after the dawn of the New Millennium, GM made an attempt to conquer the competitive world of mid-size trucks, by introducing the all-new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon models. Named for the state of Colorado, the Chevy Colorado replaced the outgoing S-10 pickup, while the Canyon took the place of GMC's discontinued Sonoma.
Like the Silverado vs. Sierra debate, it is easy to locate both similarities and differences between the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups. Both the Colorado and Canyon have undergone a host of redesigns and facelifts side-by-side since their inceptions, with the latter looking more and more like a typical GMC truck in its most recent editions. Though it does not have the tradition and prestige as other Chevy/GM trucks, the GMC Canyon has carved out a nice little niche audience in its brief existence.
Before you delve into the many aftermarket GMC Canyon parts available at CJ's, let's take a closer look at how the Canyon grew in popularity over the years.
GMC Canyon History
In 2004, if you were looking for a versatile pickup truck and could live without the weight of a half-ton rig, then you were certainly excited about the intimal release of the GMC Canyon. A 2.8L four-cylinder. 175-hp producing four-cylinder was the base engine in the 2004 GMC Canyon, with a 3.5L motor available as well.
In 2007, one year after the Canyon received its first-ever line of aesthetic changes, the mid-size pickup underwent some big changes under the hood. For the mid-generation refresh, General Motors inserted a 2.9L four-cylinder motor into the 2007 GMC Canyon and its Chevy Colorado counterpart. The 2.9L provided a nice boost in horsepower from the previous model, while the optional 3.7L, five-cylinder could produce 242 hp.
The 2008 model remained mostly unchanged following the engine and exterior modifications from the 2007 edition, but the GMC Canyon, returned for the 2009 model year with a number of much-needed enhancements. Those that purchased a 2009 GMC Canyon could finally enjoy a V8 engine option, which was several years overdue for the mid-size pickup. In an effort to further enhance the driving experience, the 2009 GMC Canyon welcomed back the ever-popular sports suspension, which had been on hiatus for several years.
After bidding farewell to several features, including the sunroof and leather bucket seats on certain models in 2010, the 2011 GMC Canyon introduced a few technological innovations. Bluetooth connectivity came standard in the 2011 GMC Canyon, which passengers could enjoy as they sat back and leaned on the redesigned headrests. Following the 2012 model year, the Canyon went dark for several years, but its popularity and the cries for quality aftermarket GMC Canyon parts remained strong.
2015: A New Beginning For the GMC Canyon
General Motors certainly made up for lost time with a complete redesign of the Canyon for the 2015 model year. The 2015 GMC Canyon maintained what its fans loved about the older editions while introducing a host of popular upgrades at the same time. Though it featured many trim levels and special packages, all 2015 GMC Canyon editions contained brilliant LED headlamps, a chrome rear bumper with a step, and sat pretty on a set of 16" chrome wheels.
The 2015 GMC Canyon came with a pair of direct-injection engine choices, with the optional 3.6L V6 producing 302 hp and 270lb-ft of torque. Additionally, the new generation Canyon welcomed a diesel engine option for the first time in the truck's history. Combined with the six-speed manual and automatic transmissions, the array of capable motors helped the 2015 Canyon surpass many of its non-GM competitors in performance, payload, and towing capacity among other areas.
Over the next several years, GM rolled out a variety of changes, both big and small to its line of mid-size pickups. The 2017 GMC Canyon received a more powerful V6 engine that could be paired with an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission. The following model year, GMC introduced an all-new rear view camera, along with a standard seven-inch infotainment screen that came complete with Bluetooth connectivity.
Between all of the exciting changes and the growing market for new GMC Canyon parts, it is clear that General Motors/Chevrolet is in the mid-size pickup race for the long haul!
