1. Before you begin, you may want to purchase the Mustang speedometer cable gear retaining clip that connects the cable to the body, as it may be destroyed when you remove it.
2. To start working on installing your new Mustang concours speedometer cable, remove the keys, chock the wheels and/or raise the car on jack stands following the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure the exhaust is cool before you begin, as you will be working near the exhaust.
3. Use the 3/4-inch wrench to loosen the speedometer cable on the back side of the Mustang instrument panel. Typically they can be removed without a wrench. Make note of the routing path of the cable then pull it through the firewall from the engine compartment side.

4. From underneath the left side of the car, observe the routing of the Mustang speedometer cable before you remove it. Use the pliers and the screwdriver to remove the retainer that holds the cable to the body near the point where the brake line and the fuel line are fastened. The clip is removed by spreading the ears apart. The clip is shown in the photo below.

5. Use the 7/16-inch wrench to remove the bolt and clip from the transmission housing. Clean the dirt and debris from the area. The end of the cable can now be removed from the transmission housing. If it is stubborn use the screw driver to pry it out.

7. Use a slotted screwdriver to turn the Mustang headlight switch retaining nut counter-clockwise until it is free.
8. Lubricate the O-ring and slide the gear end of the cable into the transmission housing. If it binds, twist the cable to align the Mustang speedometer gears. Replace retaining clip and bolt. Do not over tighten, remember you are threading into aluminum.
9. Push the Mustang speedometer cable through the firewall and thread the nut onto the instrument cluster. Tighten with the 3/4-inch wrench. Slide the cable’s firewall seal midway through the firewall. It’s a tight fit, it’s best to pull it from the inside.
