Install Difficulty:
- Moderate Project
1. To begin the installation of your new Mustang Fuel Tank Sending Unit, remove your negative battery cable. Make sure the part is not damaged.
2. Jack up the rear of the car and place jack stands under the Mustang rear control arm mounting points or rear end housing.

3. Open up the fuel door and remove the bolts holding the fuel filler pipe with a 10mm socket.

4. Go under the car and remove the screw that holds the safety latch for the filler neck.

5. Place a jack under the Mustang fuel tank to support it and remove the bolts holding the fuel tank straps using a 13mm socket.

6. Lower the jack down partially to allow you to unhook the vapor line and unplug the electrical line.

7. Lower the fuel tank down so that you can access the top of it. The fuel filler pipe will most likely need to be slid out of the side of the fuel tank. Be careful not to tear the filler pipe seal or replace the seal when reinstalling the pipe. Use a screw driver to pry the plug off of the top of the old fuel sending unit.

8. Use a flat head screw driver and a hammer to lightly nudge the Mustang fuel sending unit retaining ring for the fuel sending unit loose in a counterclockwise direction.

9. Remove the fuel sending unit and black o-ring gasket from underneath the sending unit. Place the new Mustang fuel sending unit gasket on the fuel tank. Use some grease or never-seize to hold it in place. Put the new fuel sending unit into the fuel tank.

10. Place the new locking ring on the Mustang fuel sending unit and use the screw driver and hammer to lightly tap the ring in a clockwise direction until it locks. Take turns tapping each tab on the locking ring.

11. Put dielectric grease on the terminals and inside the plug then connect the plug to the new fuel sending unit.

12. Jack the fuel tank back up into place and slide the filler pipe back into the fuel tank. Reinstall the bolts holding the fuel straps into place.
13. Reinstall the screw in the safety latch for the Mustang filler pipe.
14. Bolt the filler pipe back inside of the fuel filler door.
15. Installation of your new Mustang Fuel Tank Sending Unit is now finished. Start the car and double check the fuel gauge.
