3. Mark the Mustang steering wheel position in relationship to the shaft to ensure it goes back in the correct position as there is no keyway guide. Loosen the the 15/16 nut holding the steering wheel in place. Be sure to hold the steering wheel in place while doing this as it moves freely. Do not remove the nut fully. Try to pull on the steering wheel to see if it will come off the shaft, if not you will need to remove the nut and use the steering puller.

4. Once the steering wheel is removed, remove the six screws holding the two contact rings and the Mustang steering wheel collar. The three screws with the large heads have springs behind them. Be sure to look at the position of everything as you do this as it will make assembly much easier and quicker.

5. Once disassembled, check the Mustang steering wheel contacts on the steering wheel horn rings and clean any corrosion from them. There are 3 contacts on each ring. If they cannot be cleaned or are excessively worn, replacement parts are available. Be sure to check the two contacts sticking up from the steering column as well and clean or replace as required.

6. Install in the reverse order of disassembly. Make sure all six contact ring screws are tight. Before installing wheel to column ensure that pressing the the horn ring causing the the contacts to touch as required, also that when the Mustang Woodgrain Wheel Horn Ring is released that the contacts stop touching each other. Minor bending of the contact arms on the smaller ring might be required to achieve this. Once done, install the steering wheel fully onto the steering column making sure to align the marks made earlier during removal. Tighten the nut to 30 to 40lb ft, make sure to again hold the steering wheel in position. Reinstall the center cap and reconnect the battery. Try the horn from all three positions to ensure the contacts are still in their correct positions and the horn operates as it should.
