Mustang Scott Drake 3-Bulb Taillight Insert (1969) Installation Instructions
1969 Mustang Scott Drake 3-Bulb Taillight Inserts
These 3-Bulb Taillight Inserts from Scott Drake will fit 1969 Mustangs.
From the factory, the taillights on your 1969 Mustang were only powered by a single light bulb, which can be rather dim. However, CJ Pony Parts and Scott Drake offer the perfect upgrade - a 3-bulb insert that allows your taillights to feature three bulbs per side instead of one. It significantly brightens the rear of your 1969 Mustang, making you easier to see in any conditions.

1. To start the installation of your new Mustang Scott Drake C9ZZ-STL-13400 3-Bulb Taillight Insert, remove the tail light cluster from the rear panel by undoing the four retaining bolts. The rear view of the cluster housing below shows the location of the bolt holes.

2. Note the orientation of the Mustang taillight cluster and the 3-bulb insert below. The bottom end (right side of photo) has a more pronounced curvature than the top.

3. Remove the rubber from the front of the cluster. Just pry it out gently.

4. Remove the 6 screws that fasten the Mustang taillight lenses and chrome surround to the tail light body.

5. Now you have access to the Mustang taillight body. Remove the stock bulb and note how the socket is secured by spring loaded prongs around its circumference.

6. To remove the Mustang taillight socket just squeeze the prongs together and pull from the rear. Now you need to decide whether you are going to keep the body of the factory socket or just cut it off. I chose to maintain the factory look and just feed the wiring through, keeping the socket in place.

7. Mount the Scott Drake 3 bulb insert into the tail light housing and feed the wires through the hole at the rear. Make sure you slide the side tabs of the insert underneath any seals so it’s properly earthed to the tail light housing.

8. The three red wires are the connections for the tail lamp function of each socket in the insert and should be joined together. The other wires are for the turn signal/brake light function and are different colors for each socket. If you are not planning to use a sequential controller, you can join these three wires together as well.

9. The red tail lamp wires correspond to the black wire in the factory socket. The turn signal/brake light wires correspond to the green wire in the factory socket.

10. Re-insert the factory socket into the back of the Mustang taillight housing. Test your new installation before putting everything back together.
11. Repeat the process for the other side and you’re done installing your new Mustang Scott Drake 3-Bulb Taillight Insert.
