Since MagnaFlow's Competition cat-back has been so popular among enthusiasts, we decided to team up with MagnaFlow and offer a quad tip version of the competition cat-back which will be available exclusively at CJ Pony Parts. Today we're going to show you how to install this system and give you some sound clips.
MagnaFlow's three inch competition cat-back's been very popular for it's high quality stainless steel construction, excellent fitment, and a nice deep aggressive tone we've all come to know from the MagnaFlow Competition muffler. This is going to be the same style system as the original, but with a quad tip instead of a single tip. The awesome differences in this system though, we will show you that when we do the installation.
For this installation, they did lift or a jack and jack stands, 38 ratchet, 13 millimeter socket, and a 15 millimeter socket.
We're not going to bore you by showing you how to remove your stock exhaust system again. If you've never done it before, you loosen up these two clamps here, remove the two clamps on the rear sub frame and slide the exhaust off the hangers. The first step in installing the MagnaFlow is to install the x-pipe pipe. We're going to slide this into the factory clamps.
The x-pipe is going to be the only part that the competition quad tip shares with the standard competition. From here on out, the pipes are actually going to be unique through the mounting of the mufflers.
We're going to start with the first pipe that extends from the x-pipe to the under axle section of the exhaust system. On the standard competition system, it's actually one whole piece. This uses two to tuck it up tighter since the muffler actually mounts a little bit higher than the standard one would.
Here, just snug the clamp. You want to make sure you've got lots of movement in the pipe to adjust. Then you want to put a little bit of lube on the factory hanger. Install that on the next pipe, put the clamp on, and put it up into place. Hook that on there for now. Leave it loose.
Then we're going to put a clamp on our quad tip muffler and slide it up into the factory rear hanger. Put her all together. Now we're going to adjust it and tighten down our clamps.
Once you adjust it properly, reinstall a bolt for the rear hanger. Repeat the process on the other side. Then we adjust it, come back out front, tighten up these four clamp bolts here. Your installation's finished. Our quad tip MagnaFlow Competition's fit great. Now let's hear how they sound.
There’s that nice deep tone we are used to at idle with the competitions. A real aggressive sound you get on it as well.
The one place where nobody comes close to MagnaFlow is it idle. A lot of you have asked about the sound of a system at idle. What it sounds like. The Magnaflow Competition by far is the best sounding system on idle. It's got a nice low to it. A nice deep tone that sounds really good. Getting it on the road with the quad tip, it sounds pretty much the same as the competition cat-back system with the single tip sound. There's not a huge difference in the overall tone. In my opinion, that's a good thing but this is a good sounding exhaust system.
Definitely has that low deep tone at low RPMs and at idle, like I said before. A lot of people ask me, "Hey what's the deepest tone?" This. This is it. The MagnaFlow competition is the deepest tone I've heard yet on these cars. The nice deep tone carries throughout the RPM band. When you're not really on it, you're cruising say ... Right now I'm at 1500 RPM. It stays low. It stays nice and deep but downshift and get on it, totally changes pitch. Gets a much more aggressive sound to it.
I'm cruising now highway speeds. The dreaded 2,000 RPM and you're going to hear it. I'm not going to say it's a drone because it's not an annoying tone but it ain't something you have an exhaust with this deep of a tone, you're going to hear it when you're cruising. There's just no way around it. That's kind of the trade off for having this deep of a sound all the time but this is an automatic car. Again, we're 2,000 RPM. We're going on the highway. Perfectly livable. It's not obnoxious. It's not going to annoy it. It's not going to give you a headache but you do hear it.
It's obvious why MagnaFlow's Competition cat-back is so popular and the quad tip just takes it up another notch. That deep tone on it, that real aggressive sound you get on it. It's just a really killer combination. If you already have the valance installed on your car, the installation's pretty straightforward. It'll take around an hour, you'll be back on the road in no time.
