Hardcore Bronco fans have been waiting a long time for the world premiere of the 2021 Ford Bronco. It’s hard to believe that it’s been over 50 years since the original Bronco rolled off the assembly line.

To be a true competitor to the Jeep Wrangler, the new Bronco will need a comparable suspension system. Here’s what we know about the 2021 Bronco’s suspension so far.

Solid Rear Axles

We already know that the Ford Ranger is the basis for the 2021 Bronco. The Ranger sports Dana AdvanTEK independent front and solid rear axles along with an optional electronic-locking rear axle.

It’s worth noting the independent front axle is only available for the 4WD models of the Ranger. Parabolic rear leaf springs, monotube shocks, and a double-wishbone suspension enhance the Ranger’s durability and comfort.

A 2021 Bronco spy shot shows a solid rear axle, confirming the suspension could be like the Ranger. There’s also a heavy-duty skid plate evident in the image.

Autoblog spy shots confirm the new Bronco will have an independent front and solid rear axle. But they think the new Bronco will sport coil springs and struts rather than leaf springs.

Body-on-Frame Construction

The 2021 Bronco will be a body-on-frame construction, like the Jeep Wrangler. The body-on-frame setup is older than the unibody construction but much more durable.

Body-on-frame constructed vehicles are heavier and more resistant to flexing. This makes body-on-frame vehicles tougher for off-roading and able to haul heavier loads. You’ll also be able to sustain more damage from rocks, mud, snow, and other terrains.

While the body-on-frame setup is great for off-roading, the on-road drive quality isn’t as good. The heavier weight also decreases fuel economy in comparison to the unibody setup.

Upgrade Your 2021 Bronco Suspension

The new Bronco may be trail-ready off the lot, but off-roaders might want to upgrade their suspension. Adding a lift kit will enhance your ground clearance, while a sway bar will give you added stability. Sign up for our newsletter to stay updated on all the newest 2021 Bronco suspension parts.

Based on the Ford Ranger, the 2021 Bronco suspension will have a body-on-frame setup and solid rear axles. These will ensure the Bronco is durable enough for the trail. Although the Ranger has leaf springs, the Bronco may have coil springs instead.
