If you're like us, you've been anxiously waiting to sneak a peek at the S650 Mustang. Information surrounding the debut has been pretty minimal, with most speculation focused on a Spring 2023 debut date for the 2024 Mustang. However, a new report from Automotive News states that Ford will be giving the public their first look at the next generation of Mustang in September at the Detroit Auto Show.
The Detroit Auto Show, also known as The North American International Auto Show, was last held in January 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This September marks the return of the show, so it makes sense that Ford would want to make a splash at such an important event. The show is scheduled to run from September 14th to the 25th at the Huntington Place Convention Center in Detroit. Along with a debut date for the 2024 Mustang, Automotive News also cited unnamed sources that said production of the car will start in early 2023.
The 2024 Mustang is expected to launch with carry-over engines from the S550, namely the 2.3L I4 Ecoboost and the 5.0L V8 Coyote. This has long been speculated and it was confirmed in the report. The report also left open the possibility for hybrid powertrains in the future but didn't confirm any for the S650 at launch.
Past Mustang Debut and Release Dates
While we don't know exactly when the S650 will release to the public just yet, looking back at prior release dates can help us speculate on how long we can expect to wait.

After looking at the past reveal and release dates, it's hard to find a clear pattern. Though the reveal for the S550 was significantly earlier than its production date compared to previous generations, it's likely this is because it was its first worldwide launch. Now that the Mustang is established worldwide, we can assume that the timeline should be more similar to previous generations. Due to the lack of concrete information surrounding the 2023 Mustang, it's entirely possible that the 2022 Mustang is the final year of the S550.
While this is just speculation, the timeline Ford is constructing with this debut date suggests that there won't be another S550 Mustang. As the debut date for the S650 comes closer, we expect Ford to clear up any misconceptions and give the S550 a proper send-off if this is the end.
