Novice skill is required for this installation.
These hood catches are made of black painted aluminum, which will make them significantly more durable than the factory plastic catches, and they're adjustable for a perfect fit. They're going to give our Jeep a nice, custom look, and they're super easy to install, so today we're going to put them on our 2016 Jeep Wrangler.
Tools you'll need for this installation:
11 millimeter socket
10 millimeter socket
13 millimeter socket
Two 5 millimeter hex keys
4 millimeter hex key
16 millimeter wrench
The first thing we're going to do is obviously open up the hood. Then we're going to remove this portion of the catch on top of the hood. Remove the two nuts with a 10-millimeter socket, and remove the catch. Now we can remove the bottom portion of the hood catch that mounts to the fender. There's a 13-millimeter nut that's kind of hard to get to, I'm going to be using a 3" extension, a universal socket, and a 13 socket. Remove the nut, then you can pull off the catch.
Before we install the Rugged Ridge catch, we have to disassemble the bottom part so we can install it onto the Jeep. Then you're going to install this rubber bumper, and now it can go on the Jeep.
We can now install the bottom part of the catch arm to the fender. These are not side-specific. Once you get the bolt through, you can put the nut on the backside, then tighten it with a 13-millimeter socket and a 5-millimeter hex key. We can now reassemble the whole catch. Slide it into the notch, get the pin through, install the shorter pin on the other side. Then you need two 5-millimeter hex keys to properly tighten this.
Now you can install the upper portion of the catch. Make sure this hook part is towards the bottom of the hood, then install the two nuts. You can now tighten it down with a 4-millimeter hex key and a 10-millimeter socket.
These hood catches are adjustable so you can adjust them to your liking to make it firmer or looser. To adjust them, use a 16-millimeter wrench and loosen up the locknuts. Then you can rotate this assembly to either lengthen it or shorten it. In our case we need to lengthen ours, then tighten down the jamb nuts. Once you get it adjusted to your liking, repeat the process on the other side, then your installation's finished.
Our Rugged Ridge Adjustable Hood Catches are installed, they look way better than the factory ones and they're stronger too. There is no rubber here, it's all aluminum. Installation's not too bad, it should only take about 30 to 45 minutes, and before you know it you'll be heading off road.
