Novice skill is required for this installation.
Tools needed for this installation. A 16mm socket, and 18mm socket, a 3/8 inch ratchet, an 18mm half-inch socket and a half-inch ratchet, and maybe another set of hands. All right. Now we're going to remove the factory rear bumper. First step is going to be to remove these two bolts with a 16mm socket. Now we're going to repeat this step on the other side. We're going to remove these bolts here underneath on the rear cross member. There's one on the passenger side and one on the driver’s side. Now we're going to open up the tailgate and remove the factory bumper.
And the best place for these plastic bumpers is right here. Right? Now we're going to remove the factory stock brackets. Now we're going to remove the factory recovery point. All right? Now this step isn't necessary, but to make things a little bit easier we are going to remove the spare wheel and tire just so we can get the new bumper on a little bit easier. And now we're going to put the rear bumper brackets onto the frame reel and attach them with the factory hardware. Now we're going to snug up these two side bolts. We'll tighten them down fully once the bumper is actually on the Jeep. Now we're to the back end behind the cross member. We're going to use the factory hardware and install it into this Rugged Ridge piece.
Once again, only snug this up and we'll come back later and tighten it down completely. So now we're on to the passenger side mounting bracket. This Rugged Ridge kit includes a backing plate. We're going to slide this into the frame rail and tighten it down with the supplied hardware. All right? Now we're going to install the rear bumper. Helps to have an extra pair of hands. All right? Now we're going to put the D rings on. All right? Now we're going to snug up this side, not fully tighten it until we can get the other side installed. Once the other side is installed, we'll tighten all the bolts up.
All right? So now we're going to go back and tighten everything up. First step will be the D-ring bolts on the outside then we're going to get the bolts on the side of the frame rail, the bolts underneath the cross member, finish off with this tie in plate on this. And the last thing to do is re-install your spare tire and your installation is complete. All right? So we just finished the install of our Rugged Ridge HXD rear bumper. It really changed the look of the Jeep, gave us that aggressive look we were looking for. Install was pretty simple. It took about two hours. It might help you to have an extra pair of hands and you can find this bumper and many other great parts at CJPonyParts.com.
