This rugged ridge tailgate assist kit is designed to fit your 2007-2010 Wrangler. It mounts to the tailgate with steel brackets and a heavy duty gas shock to make accessing the cargo area much easier. It comes with everything you need for an easy installation so today we're going to install it on our 2008 Jeep Wrangler.
For this installation you'll need a drill, a bit driver, a flathead screwdriver, and safety glasses. Alright installation of this tailgate assist is pretty straight forward. First thing you want to do is open up the tailgate, and the rear window. Pull back this carpet. Okay now we're going to line up the body bracket, we're going to place it right here. We want this to be 1" away from the tailgate seal right here, and then 1/4" down from this road edge. So we have our marks here, 1/4" down, and 1" away. Then with our marker we're going to mark the holes to drill it. Mark all the holes so we can drill them. Then using this supplied drill bit, drill pilot holes in all of your marks. Now we're going to use the supplied hex bit to install the screws into the bracket, into the holes that we just drilled. Don't crank down all of them just yet, get them started, it'll make it a little bit easier.
With the bracket installed, we can now fold the carpet back over, but we will need to make a cut right here, for the bracket to come through the carpet. We're just going to feel for the bracket on this carpet, and use a knife or a razor blade to make a hole. Then snap the black cylinder end onto the bracket. With the shock attached to the bottom mount now we're going to attach it to the mount that goes to the tailgate. Then we're going to make sure the tailgate is all the way opened as far as it can go, and we're going to line this up on the tailgate. Line it up, make sure it's nice and flat and centered between the road edge and the black plastic and you can mark your holes for drilling.
Now you can install the screws. Just making a little easier to do this second screw, you're going to want to pull on this tab to remove the shock. Then you can install the second screw. And your installation's finished. We got our rugged ridge tailgate assist installed and makes opening the tailgate effortless and it looks like it was a factory install too and you know installation wasn't too bad. Should only take about 30 to 45 minutes and before you know it, you'll be heading off road.
