1970 Differentials
Once your 1970 Mustang's power comes from the engine and through the transmission and driveshaft, it comes to the rear axle and differential. The differential is what determines how much power is sent to each of your rear wheels. If damaged or overly worn, your differential will cause uneven tire wear, uncomfortable vibration, and a grinding sound sure to get under your skin.
Rebuild or Complete Unit?
If you've been happy with your differential so far, you may opt to rebuild it. If you have the experience, tools, and patience for a rebuild, it can be rewarding.
The advantage to the drop-in unit is that you can benefit from getting a more modern differential or even making a big change. Many classic Mustangs came with open differentials, but many drivers prefer the limited-slip (so many that modern Mustangs come stock with a limited-slip). Your less-than-perfect original differential may be a great opportunity to get a performance-oriented differential that will elevate your Mustang build.
A solid performance differential will give you years of service. It takes a little bit of thought now upfront, but once you’ve tightened the bolts, it’s something that doesn’t require much thought.
With the right differential, you'll be putting power to the pavement for years to come.
