How to Install a Blowoff Valve on a Ford Bronco

The 6th-gen Ford Bronco offers various turbocharged engine configurations, making a blow-off valve (BOV) an ideal modification. A blow-off valve's primary function is to release the excess boost pressure in the charge pipe during acceleration, which could otherwise cause damage to the turbo by over-boosting. The distinct sound that enthusiasts associate with turbocharged cars, often described as a "whoosh," is actually the sound of the blow-off valve releasing the excess pressure. This is different from turbo flutter, which is the "stu-tu-tu" sound you hear from the turbo when you let off the accelerator and the blow-off valve isn't functioning properly.

The Bronco does come with a recirculation valve from the factory, which recirculates excess boost back into the intake track. However, this keeps the car quiet, and you don't get that "whoosh" sound that many turbo owners love. Adding a BOV is great option for a cheap Bronco mod. Also, if you're tuned and pushing higher amounts of boost than from the factory, an aftermarket blow-off valve will do a much better job at managing it. Blow-off valves are only found on turbocharged vehicles. If you want to learn more about the difference between turbochargers vs superchargers, check out this article.

In these steps, we'll be installing a Turbosmart Kompact Series blow-off valve, but the process is largely the same with any aftermarket BOV. The Turbosmart blow-off valve works with 2.3L and 2.7L Broncos.

Parts and Tools Needed:

  • Socket Wrench
  • E6 Socket
  • Phillips-Head Screwdriver

Step 1: Locate Recirculating Valve

Open the hood and locate the recirculating valve. It should be on the left side of your engine bay connected to the turbo.
