Fox Body Ignition Switch Installation Instructions

If your Fox Body Mustang is having difficulties starting, it's likely an issue with the ignition switch assembly. Thankfully, the ignition switch assembly is easy to replace on your 1979-1993 Mustang. With only a few basic tools and an hour of time, you can quickly and easily replace the ignition switch assembly and reliably start your Mustang for many years to come.

Tools Needed:

  • 10mm Wrench
  • Phillips Head Screwdriver
  • Flat Head Screwdriver

Fox Body Mustang Ignition Switch Install Instructions

For this install, we used an aftermarket Fox Body ignition switch from CJ Classics. This ignition switch assembly directly replaces your factory switch and will fit all 1979-1993 Mustangs.

Step 1: Remove Under-Dash Trim

Remove the negative battery cable from the battery. Locate the under-dash screws at the base of the dash trim beneath the driver’s side steering column. Use the Torx screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the under-dash trim.

Step 2: Remove Steering Collar

Locate the plastic collar at the base of the steering cover. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the steering column cover.

Step 3: Remove Steering Cover Screws

Above the steering collar is a trim panel that covers the steering column. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws attached to the steering column trim panel. The panel is located between the steering wheel and the dash.

Step 4: Remove Steering Column Trim Clips

Pull the left side of the small plastic filler piece on the side of the steering column to release the trim clips. Then, remove the trim panel from the steering column.

Step 5: Remove Ignition Switch Bolts

The ignition switch assembly is located on the right side of the Mustang steering wheel area. Locate and remove the two Torx bolts holding the assembly to the steering column using the 10mm wrench. Use a hollow Torx screwdriver to take the bolts out.

Step 6: Disconnect Ignition Switch

Pull the assembly away from the steering column and disconnect the black plug from the assembly.

Step 7: Attach New Ignition Switch

Attach the supplied ignition switch to the stock ignition switch wiring. Then, attach the ignition switch assembly to the steering column with the 10mm bolts. Tighten down each of the bolts.

Step 8: Reinstall Steering Column Cover

Reinstall the Mustang steering column trim, the plastic collar, and the lower dash trim by tightening the respective screws.

Your installation is complete and you can test out the new Mustang ignition switch assembly by putting the key into the ignition and starting the car.
