Fox Body Mustang Wiring Harness Differences
Last Updated February 9, 2024 | Kevin BrentFord used several different wiring harnesses on 5.0L Mustangs from the 1987-1995 model years. If you're doing a mass air conversion on your Mustang or need a replacement harness, follow the guide below to find out the differences between Fox Body Mustang harnesses by model year.
Fox Body Wiring Harness Changes
1987-1988 Fox Body Wiring Harness
1987-1988 Mustangs used a speed density system, which required a specific type of Fox Body wiring harness. Thankfully, all the speed density engine harnesses from this era are interchangeable. Ford used a different computer in 1986, but the engine harness is the same. The dash harness in the 1986 Mustang is specific to that year and will not work in 1987-1993 models.
1989 Fox Body Wiring Harness
The 1989 Mustang model is the only one to feature a mass airflow system and no airbag. This model year has a specific engine wiring harness that will not fit other Fox Body Mustangs. However, the dash harness is the same from 1987-1989 on all Mustang models. If you're doing a mass air conversion, you can use the 1989 harness in place of the stock 1987-1988 Fox Body wiring harness.
1990-1992.5 Fox Body Wiring Harness
From 1990 until halfway through 1992, the Mustang was equipped with the same style of engine wiring harness. These Mustang models featured a mass airflow system with an airbag. If you are looking to install a wiring harness yourself on one of these Mustangs, the fuel pump relay is located under the driver's seat. The dash harnesses for all Mustang models from 1990-1993 are interchangeable.
1992.5-1993 Fox Body Wiring Harness
Mustangs from this era also had a mass airflow system and an airbag. The main difference with the wiring harness is that the fuel pump relay is located in the engine compartment. Other than that, all dash and engine wiring harnesses from 1990-1993 models are interchangeable.
1994-1995 Mustangs
All the engine harnesses from 1994-1995 V8 Mustangs are interchangeable. The dash harnesses are interchangeable for these model years as well.
