Mustang GT MSRP by Year

As long as the Mustang has been around, so have the GT models. GT stands for Gran Touring, and is associated with improved performance and in some cases, like with the GT500 models, exclusivity.

Though at first “GT” simply stood for a package that included several performance-oriented additions, about midway through the first generation Ford figured out what people wanted from a GT option and started to offer it as a separate entity. The GT is much much more than simply a V8 engine under the hood, it also represents the line between daily drivers and performance vehicles. As such, the prices tend to be higher than those of the base model, as you might expect. The prices for the GT model have fluctuated in much the same way as the prices for Mustangs in general and for the convertible models of America’s favorite pony car.

Much like the convertibles, GTs were not available during the Mustang II phase of the Mustang’s evolution and took an extended vacation from ‘68 until ‘81. This wasn’t due to a lack of popularity, but rather was designed to make room for the Cobra, another performance oriented package.

When the GT returned for the 1982 model year, it was to great acclaim, and fortunately we haven’t had an extended period without a GT option since. These are the prices for the GTs from 1968 till today, both the original MSRP and also what it would look like when adjusted for inflation. As the Mustang’s reputation has grown, so have its prices on its premium models. But given the rate of appreciation on classic GTs, people are excited to make the investment in Ford Mustang history.
