What is Exhaust?

After the combustion process takes place in an engine, gas is produced. This gas needs a way to escape the vehicle in order to bring more cool air into the engine and to expel the toxic fumes. Exhaust gases escape the engine through the exhaust valve, making their way into the exhaust manifold. In the exhaust manifold, exhaust from all of the cylinders is collected and sent to the catalytic converter to be cleaned. Single exhausts are found on most vehicles and send the exhaust gases through one sole pipe. Single exhaust systems, which are typically in a Y-pipe design, collect the gases from the manifold(s) into one singular pipe before traveling through the muffler and exiting the vehicle. Dual exhausts, on the other hand, have separate pipes connected to each manifold that then distribute the gases through two separate tubes. Although many vehicles appear to have a dual-exhaust system, many times it is just a dual exit exhaust or an exhaust with twin tips rather than an actual dual exhaust system. When many people think of dual exhausts, they may not be thinking of “true” dual exhausts that have two exit pipes. While single exhausts are associated with the Y-pipe formation, dual exhausts will usually either utilize an H-pipe or X-pipe design.
