SN95 Mustang Spark Plug Wire Install
Last Updated September 20, 2024 | Kevin BrentCorrect cylinder ignition is key to your SN95 Mustang's engine performance and longevity. Over time, the wiring in your ignition system can wear down and cause firing issues if not addressed quickly. Replacing your SN95 Mustang's spark plugs and spark plug wires is one of the best ways to stay ahead of electrical problems.
Aftermarket spark plug wires offer many benefits for Mustang owners. They feature a wire-wound ignition wire, which offers low resistance for minimum spark loss. They also use silicone insulation and boots that can withstand high temperatures and voltage loss for minimum cross-fire. Some aftermarket wires have stainless steel terminals that are more resistant to fuels, oils, and solvents, which gives them greater longevity than the factory spark plugs.
Adding new spark plugs is an easy installation for mechanics at any skill level. Check out our step-by-step instructions below for a comprehensive guide. With a few simple tools and an hour or two, you'll be back on the road with an upgraded ignition system in your SN95 Mustang.
Tools Needed:
- Wire Puller
- Flat Head Screwdriver
Step 1: Disconnect Battery
Pop the hood, disconnect the negative battery terminal, and locate your old spark plug wires. In this case, we are swapping out old Ford Racing wires.
Step 2: Detach Spark Plug Wires
Remove your spark plug wires from the coil packs by squeezing the tabs on the sides and pulling upward.
Step 3: Detach Cold Air Intake Tube
To access the plug wires on the passenger side, you will need to remove your Mustang's cold air intake tube. Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the screws holding the tube. You can also push the tube to the side rather than removing it completely.
Step 4: Remove Spark Plug Wires
Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs by pulling straight up. If you are having difficulty pulling the plugs out by hand, use a wire puller.
Step 5: Remove Wires from Wire Looms
Once all the spark plug wires are removed from the spark plugs, detach the wires from the wire looms and remove all plug wires from the ignition system components. Set the wire looms aside.
Step 6: Install New Spark Plug Wires
Line up your new spark plug wires with the existing ports before you start plugging them back in. Use some dielectric grease on each end of the wires to keep out moisture.
Step 7: Reconnect Plug Wires to Coils
Reconnect each plug wire to its proper coil by pushing them down until they each click into place. The correct firing order for a 96-98 2V 4.6 Mustang GT is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.
Here are the coil locations looking under the hood in front of the car:
- Left Side
- 6-3
- 1-5
- Right Side
- 7-2
- 4-8
Step 8: Reconnect Coil Wires to Spark Plugs
Reconnect the coil wires to the new spark plugs by pushing them down until they pop into place. Give the wire a little tug once it is in place to make sure it is securely connected.
SN95 Mustang GT Firing Order: Below is the correct order of the cylinders on the engine looking at it from under the hood.
- Left Side
- 4
- 3
- 2
- 1
- Right Side
- 8
- 7
- 6
- 5
Step 9: Reattach Wires to Wire Looms
Once you have all the wires reconnected to your spark plugs, position the wires into their corresponding wire looms.
Step 10: Reattach Cold Air Intake
Check the wire connections on the rest of your Mustang's ignition system components and reattach the air intake tube.
Upgrade the Rest of Your Mustang's Ignition System
Installing new spark plugs and spark plug wiring on your SN95 Mustang is a simple way to ensure your Mustang's electrical system stays functional. Aftermarket wires can provide more consistent sparks with more durable materials that will last for years to come.
Spark plug wires aren't the only part of your SN95 Mustang's ignition system though. If you're looking for more ways to upgrade your Mustang's starter, check out our options for aftermarket Mustang ignition parts.
